Road Safety Day

Road Safety Authority Interactive Shuttle + Roll-Over Simulator 10am-4pm Tues 29th Oct outside Áras na Mac Léinn

  • Practice your driving and hazard perception skills on our simulators (car, motorbike, bicycle)
  • Take part in the roll-over simulation which demonstrates how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision.
  • Practice the driver theory test.
  • Practice safe cycling skills on our state of the art bicycle simulator
  • See how driving environments and speed affect your braking distances on the brake reaction timer.

Please Register Your Leap Card

If you have a Student Leap Card please make sure to log on to www.leapcard.ie and REGISTER your card number. That means that if you lose your card or it’s stolen you won’t lose the credit on the card as this can be transferred to your new card number.

LIFT Facilitator Training at NUIG

LIFT Ireland will be adding to their network of over 500 facilitators with a half day FREE facilitator training workshop 9.30am-1.30pm Thursday 24th of October at NUI Galway. Their vision is to make Ireland a better place to live in by creating better leaders across our society. By becoming a LIFT Facilitator, you are becoming a central part of a national initiative designed to raise the standards of personal leadership in Ireland, and by doing that, raising the standards of life for all people living on our island. Disclosure Training

Would you know what to do if a friend came to you saying they had suffered sexual violence? Our half day Disclosure Training course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence, in settings where this is likely to occur. The course is delivered by Galway Rape Crisis Centre 10am-1.30pm Tues 5th Nov and costs €10. Limited spaces left – sign up in the SU.

Take the Irish National Digital Experience (INDEx) Survey win €300!

You are invited to take part in NUI Galway’s INDEx survey – a national survey to find out more about how you use digital technologies and how this affects your experience of learning. Your voice will contribute to important decision-making around digital teaching and learning within NUI Galway. The INDEx survey takes only 5 minutes to complete. It is open to NUI Galway students from 14 October – 3 November. Participation is anonymous and entirely voluntary. There are €300 All4One vouchers to be won each week by NUI Galway students!

Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a simple and natural way to meditation, working on the body’s subtle system to bring balance and a greater sense of wellbeing to our lives. It can also help to relieve stress and improve health. Postgraduate Open Day

The NUIG Postgraduate Open Day is on 12pm-3pm Tues 5th Nov in the Bailey Allen Hall.

What’s the difference between a psychopath and a sadist or a narcissist?
If you want to know, the Psychological Society will be holding a talk on Wednesday 30th of October at 6.30pm in AMBE G065 (Psychology Building). Christie Tetreault, a PhD candidate in the School of Psychology, will be giving the talk on the Dark Tetrad (Machiavellianism, narcissism, sadism, and psychopathy): who they really are and how they act. The talk will be followed by Stanley Kubrick’s award winning movie A Clockwork Orange (this film contains disturbing images that may be upsetting). There will be snacks, coffee/tea, and Halloween candy. Everyone is welcome!

Anti-Racism Workshop

This workshop will take participants through a lively, engaged process looking at how racism functions, where it came from and what we can do to build a more equal society, locally and globally. Previous participants have described the workshop as “thought provoking” “a total eye-opener” and “inspiring”. The workshop is just €5 and takes place 10am-1.30pm Mon 4th Nov.

Would you be able to tell if someone was feeling suicidal?

SafeTALK is a three-hour training programme that helps participants to become alert to persons with suicidal thoughts. It’s free and takes place 6pm-9.15pm Tues 19th Nov in the Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill. Places are limited and pre-booking is essential. BOOK HERE.

Child Protection Training

Do you work or volunteer with children/young people? Our Child Protection Training Course covers topics relevant to staff and volunteers working directly with children and young people. It covers policy, legislation, attitudes and values, definitions and signs of abuse, safe recruitment, code of behaviour and scenarios. The course cost is €15. Course takes place 9am-1pm Fri 6th Dec or 2pm-6pm Fri 6th Dec. Limited spaces left – sign up in the SU.

SU Charities – Volunteers Needed

This year we will be raising funds for Domestic Violence Response and AIDS West. If you want to get involved and help us to raise as much money as possible for these two great charities please contact studentsunion@nuigalway.ie We are also always looking for new fundraising ideas so if you have any suggestions please send them on! Remember all the time you spend volunteering with NUI Galway Students’ Union counts towards your ALIVE Volunteering Certificate application

Student Leap Cards now just €10

To get your Student Leap Cards all you need to do is apply online HERE, then bring your code next week (it only lasts 7 days), your new college ID and €10 up to the SU Office. These are valid until the 31st of Dec 2020 and we can also top your card up for you. Remember because the NUIG ID Cards don’t have expiry dates many transport companies won’t accept them as proof you are entitled to a student rate but they will accept the Student Leap Card.
