TAKING GRINDS
Attending tutorials is very beneficial. You may feel more confident asking questions of a tutor, rather than in a classroom with many other students. Also, the tutor can focus on you more than a lecturer who may have 300 students to take care of. During the year, or particularly coming up to exams, you may feel worried and anxious about some aspect of your course. If you feel unprepared for exams, or just generally need help in your particular subject, grinds may be an effective solution.
The Students’ Union website provides a service detailing a list of people offering grinds to students. Always consult your lecturer or programme director first as they may be able to help you out.
It’s also advisable to check exam requirements with your college. These can sometimes vary, so it’s best to check with somebody who actually knows.
Before taking grinds in any subject, students are advised to consult with their lecturer(s) or course director, who may offer additional support in problematic areas of your course. They are also likely to know more about the course materials than potential tutors. It’s important to note that the Students’ Union does not regulate or check any tutor, qualifications, credentials or their prices. Also, we highly advise students to meet the tutor in a public place.
Finally, always agree on a fee with the tutor before the grind takes place.
Prior to using this database, students should note the following:
- Tutors are not monitored by the Students’ Union.
- Quality of grinds cannot be guaranteed by the Students’ Union.
- Any fees should be agreed between the tutor and the student(s) in advance.
- For safety reasons, students are advised to hold the first meeting in a public place.
- Any student giving grinds to another student should be aware and maintain clarity of who is doing the work to ensure that accusations of academic dishonesty (plagiarism) are avoided. Tutors should avoid assisting assessed work.
