How to Avoid Rental Scams this summer:
- Do your homework – familiarise yourself with the average rent price in the area. If the rent is super low and seems too good to be true, it usually is.
- Use online maps to double check the property exists and is at the stated address.
- Check short-term rental sites to ensure the property is not being use by a fraudster for “viewings” who will take your deposit money.
- Keep copies of all correspondence between yourself and the advertiser including bank details + property ad.
- Use legitimate well-known rental agencies if possible.
- Don’t hand over money until you have seen the property and are happy with its condition. Bring someone with you to get a second opinion.
- Don’t make payments until you have keys and a signed contract. Check the keys fit the lock.
- Don’t transfer any money unless you’ve carried out all these checks and are sure the listing is genuine.
You can pick up a FREE rent book in the SU Office with lots more tips.
