How to Avoid Rental Scams this summer:

  1. Do your homework – familiarise yourself with the average rent price in the area. If the rent is super low and seems too good to be true, it usually is.
  2. Use online maps to double check the property exists and is at the stated address.
  3. Check short-term rental sites to ensure the property is not being use by a fraudster for “viewings” who will take your deposit money.
  4. Keep copies of all correspondence between yourself and the advertiser including bank details + property ad.
  5. Use legitimate well-known rental agencies if possible.
  6. Don’t hand over money until you have seen the property and are happy with its condition. Bring someone with you to get a second opinion.
  7. Don’t make payments until you have keys and a signed contract. Check the keys fit the lock.
  8. Don’t transfer any money unless you’ve carried out all these checks and are sure the listing is genuine.

You can pick up a FREE rent book in the SU Office with lots more tips.
