Students’ Union’s Redistributes over 50,000 kilograms of Surplus Food in 2025
Spéir, the University of Galway Students’ Union Pantry, is celebrating a huge achievement of redistributing over 50,000 kilograms of surplus food in 2025. The Students’ Union partners with FoodCloud to redistribute surplus food which would otherwise go to landfill. Spéir, which is funded by the Student Levy is hugely popular with students who are keen to minimise the environmental effect of food waste.
The figures which were compiled by FoodCloud in their annual Impact Report record 51,190 kilograms of surplus food redistributed by the Students’ Union. This is equal to 121,881 meals and has saved 118,761 kilograms of CO2.
FoodCloud is an Irish charity that tackles climate change and food insecurity by connecting businesses that have surplus food to communities that can use it. Established in 2013, FoodCloud works with over community groups across Ireland. Last year it redistributed over 4,248 tonnes of surplus food which equates to over 10.1 million meals.
Students’ Union President Maisie Hall said: “Spéir is an excellent initiative and is very popular with our students. The University has kindly provided space for us to operate the service, and we are delighted that we can work together on such a hugely beneficial sustainability project.
Students’ Union Environmental and Sustainability Officer, Molly Hickey added: “Students are very conscious of environmental sustainability and their role in reducing CO2 emissions. Reducing food waste is just one way to do that and working with FoodCloud has been a fantastic partnership”

Oibríonn Comhaltas na Mac Léinn i gcomhar le FoodCloud chun athdháileadh a dhéanamh ar bhia barrachais a rachadh chuig líonadh talún murach é.
