Staff and students will work together in having trained actors demonstrate the works of William Shakespeare in both NUI Galway and local secondary schools. This is complementary and potentially an alternative to costly school trips to stage productions.
Students: Muireann Ní Raghallaigh, Darragh O’Brien, Hannah O’Reilly, Claudia O’Sullivan
Staff: Patrick Lonergan
Project Update – 4 April 2014:
- We’ve had a wonderful response from our students and teachers.
- We have hosted six workshops so far, five during theatre week in NUI Galway where students came to us, and one in Athlone where the Marist attended a workshop on Othello.
- The workshops we offer are Macbeth, Othello and Merchant of Venice.
- We have demand for another in Ballinasloe with St. Cuan’s in Othello and Macbeth.
- One of the teachers is hoping to send us on pictures and responses from students!
Project Update – 29 November 2013
Today (29th November) we re-drafted the letter that will be sent out to schools over the next week or so, giving them a chance to be ‘exposed to our product’ before Christmas, with the idea being that we will return to them in January with some more specific details regarding the workshops. The idea is that we can tailor them to suit the needs of each school, and can send in people who deal with Othello one day, and Macbeth the next, etc.
Our theatre company ThereisBear! are also having the launch of our Spring programme in the Cellar bar next Monday the 2nd December, and the announcement of the Shakespeare workshops will be included in the evening alongside our upcoming productions. We have the Explore logo on all our invites, and are happy to be able to promote the initiative as we go.
