NUI Galway Students’ Union Celebrates 50 Years

On Saturday 7th June 2014 over 120 current and former Students’ Union Officers, Staff, journalists, colleagues and friends gathered in The Students’ Union Club (College Bar) to celebrate the Union turning 50. Liam Kelleher a member of the 1964/65 Students’ Union Executive Committee was present on the night having served alongside President Michael D. Higgins 50 years ago. A special anniversary publication was produced to mark the occassion “SinChaint” with contributions from former editors of Sin and Coolchaint newspapers, NUI Galway Alumni and former Officers from the Students’ Union. 

Incoming Students’ Union President for 2014/15 Declan Higgins spoke at the event acknowledging the amazing work done by the Students’ Union Officers over the last 50 years to make the SU what it is today. The Students’ Union motto “An injury to one is an injury to all” continues to reflect the work of the Students’ Union on behalf of it’s 17,000 members today.
