New Students’ Union President Takes Office

Faye Ní Dhomhnaill has taken up the role of President of University of Galway Students’ Union which is the representative group of over 19,000 students. Faye, a Law, English and Performing Arts Graduate from Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, was elected by her peers earlier this year and has now taken the reins in the Students’ Union.

Faye follows in the footsteps of President Michael D Higgins who was the University of Galway Students’ Union President back in 1964. She will be working closely with the other SU Officers including the Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Chloe Anderson, the Vice President/Education Officer Tom Forde and the Vice President for the Irish Language Julieanne Ní Mhullaiodh.

Students’ Union President Faye Ní Dhomhnaill said: “I am delighted to take up this prestigious role representing the students of University of Galway. It will be another challenging year for students, with issues such as accommodation and the cost of living already popping up, but myself and the other SU Officers will be working hard this year for our members. University of Galway students will need extra support in these testing circumstances to ensure that they have the best possible university experience. We are here for our students and are ready to defend their rights. We’re going to work hard to make sure students have the best university experience possible.”

Uachtarán nua ar Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn tar éis dul i mbun oifige

Tá Faye Ní Dhomhnaill tar éis dul i mbun oifige mar Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, an grúpa ionadaíoch do bhreis agus 19,000 mac léinn. Céimí sa Dlí, sa Bhéarla agus sna Taibhealaíona as Coill an Chollaigh, Co. an Chabháin í Faye. Toghadh a comh-mhic léinn ní ba luaithe sa bhliain í agus tá sí anois tar éis teacht i gceannas ar an gComhaltas.

Tá Faye ag déanamh mar a rinne an tUachtarán Mícheál D. Ó hUigínn roimpi, a bhí ina uachtarán ar Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe siar in 1964. Beidh sí ag obair as lámha a chéile le hOifigigh eile an Chomhaltais, lena n-áirítear an Leas-Uachtarán/An tOifigeach Leasa agus Comhionannais, Chloe Anderson, an Leas-Uachtarán/An tOifigeach Oideachais, Tom Forde, agus an Leas-Uachtarán Gaeilge, Julieanne Ní Mhullaiodh.

Dúirt Faye Ní Dhomhnaill, Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Tá an-áthas orm glacadh leis an ról iontach tábhachtach seo ag déanamh ionadaíocht do mhic léinn Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. Tá bliain dhúshlánach eile i ndán dúinn, agus ceisteanna maidir le cóiríocht agus an costas maireachtála tar éis teacht aníos cheana, ach beidh mé féin agus Oifigigh eile an Chomhaltais ag obair go dian ar son na mball i gcónaí. Beidh tacaíocht bhreise ag teastáil ó mhic léinn Ollscoil na Gaillimhe ag an am crua seo lena chinntiú go mbeidh siad in ann an leas is fearr is féidir a bhaint as saol na hollscoile. Is ar mhaithe leis na mic léinn atá muid agus tá muid faoi réir lena gcearta a chosaint. Tá muid chun ár ndícheall a dhéanamh lena chinntiú go mbeidh gach uile mhac léinn in ann an leas is fearr is féidir a bhaint as saol na hollscoile.”
