Students’ Union Raises €13,000 for Charity
NUI Galway Students’ Union today presented the proceeds of their Charity Challenge fundraising events to Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health. The Charity Challenge saw NUI Galway students and staff take on different challenges each month from November to April to raise over €13,000 for the charities.
Over 400 people signed up to take park in Kilometre Challenges, Random Act of Kindness Challenges, Choose Your Own Challenge, the New Year Challenge and the Hair Raiser Challenge. The challenges helped the NUI Galway community to stay active and engaged whilst raising funds for three great causes.
Students’ Union President Pádraic Toomey said: “The response to the 6 months of challenges was fantastic and it helped us all feel connected even though we were apart. Despite the huge challenges we all faced this year, students have once again done their bit to help others. NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities and they have excelled themselves again this year.”
Students’ Union Vice-President/Education Officer Emma Sweeney added: “In what has been a very stressful academic year it’s great that the students of NUI Galway have put such a huge effort in to raising funds to help others. We are delighted to be presenting €13,000 to these three amazing charities who do so much for those in need. To have raised so much more than last year, in the height of a pandemic, is a great achievement for all involved.”

€13,000 Tiomsaithe ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn ar son Carthanachta
Inniu bhronn Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh an t-airgead a tiomsaíodh mar chuid den Dúshlán Carthanachta ar Ionad Éigeandála na Gaillimhe um Éigniú, Comhpháirtíocht Uathachais na Gaillimhe agus Meabhairshláinte Helplink. Sa Dúshlán Carthanachta thug mic léinn agus baill foirne de chuid OÉ Gaillimh faoi dhúshláin éagsúla gach mí ó mhí na Samhna go mí Aibreáin le breis is €13,000 a bhailiú do na carthanais.
Chláraigh ní ba mhó ná 400 duine le páirt a ghlacadh i ndúshláin amhail Dúshlán na gCiliméadar, Dúshlán na gCineáltas gan Choinne, Do Rogha Dúshlán, Dúshlán na hAthbhliana agus Dúshlán Hair Raiser. Chabhraigh na dúshláin le pobal OÉ Gaillimh fanacht gníomhach gnóthach agus airgead a bhailiú ar son trí chúis mhaithe ag an am céanna.
Bhí an méid seo le rá ag Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Pádraic Toomey: “Bhí an-ghlacadh leis na dúshláin le himeacht na 6 mhí agus chabhraigh siad ar fad linn cur le chéile tráth nach raibh muid in ann a bheith le chéile. In ainneoin na ndúshlán ollmhór a bhí le sárú againn uile i mbliana, tá a gcion féin déanta ag mic léinn arís eile le cabhrú le daoine eile. Tá traidisiún na carthanachta go smior i mic léinn OÉ Gaillimh agus tá gaisce déanta acu arís i mbliana.”
Dúirt Emma Sweeney, Leasuachtarán de chuid an Chomhaltais/an tOifigeach Oideachais: “Cé gur bliain acadúil an-strusmhar a bhí ann, is iontach an rud é go ndearna mic léinn OÉ Gaillimh a seacht ndícheall airgead a bhailiú le cabhrú le daoine eile. Tá ríméad orainn €13,000 a bhronnadh ar na trí charthanas iontacha seo a thugann cúnamh nach beag do dhaoine in am an ghátair. Is éacht ollmhór é gur éirigh leo siúd a bhí páirteach ní ba mhó airgid a thiomsú in aimsir na paindéime ná a bailíodh an bhliain seo caite.”
