Council notes
Men’s mental health is a very serious issue which is reflected by research in the field. A study conducted by Samaritans found that less than 20% of young men experiencing mental health difficulties will seek help from a mental health professional. Young men are less likely to avail of the services we have available, such as counselling, and are less likely to speak to someone regarding their mental health. Young men are suffering, and they are suffering in silence.
Council believes
Grassroots initiatives, such as the Seize the Awkward Campaign ran this year, are key to normalising conversations about mental health amongst men. While it will not solve the issue, and SU Officers should keep lobbying both local and national representatives to improve our mental health services both on campus and generally, campaigns like this make the topic less stigmatised.
Council mandates
That the SU President, along with the SU VP Welfare & Equality, will organise a week long men’s mental health campaign at some point in the academic term, to share information regarding how to access services and to normalise speaking about mental health.
