Before the Exam

  • We all learn differently, try different study methods and find out what works for you.
  • Focus and systematically work through each topic, question by question.
  • Do past exam papers and practice questions.
  • If you need help with a topic – reach out to your classmates or your lecturer.
  • Know when your exams are – check out your personalised timetable on the University of Galway exams website.
  • Know what type of exam you will be sitting – open book, MCQ, 2 hour written paper etc. if you are unsure – ASK.

During the Exam

  • Take time to settle yourself and BREATHE
  • Read all questions carefully.
  • Leave time to review your paper at the end.
  • Set time allocations for each question and move on once the time elapses.

Minding Yourself

  • Take regular breaks during study.
  • Avoid burn out, sleep well, keep active and allow yourself to take time off.
  • Eat healthy
  • Set personal goals.
  • Take each day as it comes – don’t be disheartened if you have a bad exam or study isn’t going well.

If Something Goes Wrong

  • If you lose your Student ID card you can buy a new one for €20 at the Student Registry Help Desk in Áras Uí Chathail.
  • If something goes wrong that is outside of your control that means that you cannot attend your exam you can defer your exam to August.
  • If you fail an exam, you will have an opportunity to appeal the result.
  • If you fail an exam there will be an opportunity for you to re-sit the exam in August.

Study Break Policy

The Study Break Policy is now in place in the Library until 20th Dec. There’s an “I’m Taking a Study Break” timesheet that you must use to record the time you leave for a break which can be 5-60 minutes. Timesheets are available on all 3 floors of the Library. Belongings left at desks without timesheet may be moved.

Freshers’ Point Facilitated Study

Facilitated study sessions for first year students 9am-11am Tues 3rd, Weds 4th + Thurs 5th Dec in AC202. Student facilitators will guide you through the Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of focused study, followed by a 5-minute break) and lead you in some active movement breaks. There’ll also be free hot drinks and pastries and you can keep your study space for the rest of the day!

Calm Zone

The Calm Zone is a space to chill out, escape sensory stress and overload, and ‘just be’ while you study for and sit your exams. Relax on bean bags in a softly lit sanctuary with weighted blankets, ear defenders, fidget toys, arts + crafts, cards and board games.

PC Suites unavailable during Semester 1 Exam Session

To facilitate Semester 1 computer-based exams, a number of PC Suites will be unavailable for general use during the exam period.

The following PC Suites will be unavailable for general use from 14:00 on Wednesday 4th December 2024 until 20.00 on Friday 20th December 2024.

•              Arts & Science Building – Arts Science Suite – Ground Floor – Room RM105

•              Arts & Science Building – Arts Faculty Suite – First Floor – Room RM ISS229

Additionally, the following six PC Suites will be unavailable for general use from 14.00 on Friday 13th December until 14.00 on Friday 20th December 2024.
