Students Win Big at National Awards

The recent Student Achievement Awards celebrated the contribution students from across Ireland have made to the student community and Irish society in the past year. The SAAIs are the official student recognition event of the student movement in Ireland overseen by USI (the Union of Students in Ireland).

This year University of Galway Students’ Union nominees were shortlisted for an impressive 21 awards and won a record 5 awards at the ceremony in Dublin.

The awards won by the students were:

  • Access Champion of the Year: Latisha McCrudden
  • Postgraduate Champion of the Year: Chris Stewart
  • Charity Champion of the Year: University of Galway Students’ Union
  • Individual Contribution to Student Media: Caoimhe Looney
  • Student Media Outlet of the Year: Galway Pulse

Students’ Union President Dean Kenny said: “We are so proud of all our nominees and winners at the Student Achievement Awards. The student movement is in good hands looking at the dedication of our amazing Postgraduate and Access Champions Chris and Latisha. Our Sin newspaper editor Caoimhe Looney has done sterling work this year and well deserves her contribution to student media award. We’re also delighted to have won the Charity Champion of the year award for our record breaking fundraising for the SU Charities this year and of course the triumphant return of RAG Week.”

Bua Mór Bainte ag Mic Léinn ag na Gradaim Náisiúnta

Ag Gradaim na hÉireann d’Éachtaí Mac Léinn a bhí ar siúl le déanaí, rinneadh ceiliúradh ar an méid a rinne mic léinn ó cheann ceann na tíre ar son phobal na mac léinn agus shochaí na hÉireann le bliain anuas. Is iad Gradaim na hÉireann d’Éachtaí Mac Léinn imeacht oifigiúil aitheantais ghluaiseacht na mac léinn in Éirinn, agus is é AMLÉ (Aontas na Mac Léinn in Éirinn) a dhéanann maoirseacht orthu.

Bhí ainmnithe de chuid Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe ar an ngearrliosta le haghaidh 21 gradam suntasach i mbliana, agus bhuaigh siad 5 cinn acu ag an searmanas i mBaile Átha Cliath, an líon is mó riamh.

  • Soláthraí Meán Mac Léinn na Bliana: Galway Pulse

Dúirt Dean Kenny, Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Táimid an-bhródúil as na hainmnithe agus as na buaiteoirí go léir ag Gradaim na hÉireann d’Éachtaí Mac Léinn. Is léir óna thiomanta atá ár Seaimpíní Iarchéime agus Rochtana iontacha, Chris agus Latisha, go bhfuil gluaiseacht na mac léinn faoi chúram maith. Tá an-jab go deo déanta i mbliana ag eagarthóir an nuachtáin Sin, Caoimhe Looney, agus tá an gradam ‘Saothar Aonair do Mheáin na Mac Léinn’ tuillte go maith aici. Tá an-áthas orainn freisin gur bhuaigh muid an gradam ‘Seaimpín Carthanachta na Bliana’ freisin as an méid airgid thar na bearta a d’éirigh linn a thiomsú ar son Charthanais an Chomhaltais i mbliana agus, ar ndóigh, filleadh Sheachtain RAG.”
