Article  16 of the Students’ Union Constitution makes provision for referenda on policy or constitutional matters.

Referendum on Students’ Union position on the Direct Provision System.

On Thursday 3 March you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not the Students’ Union condemns the Direct Provision System for asylum seekers.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:

“The Students’ Union condemns the direct provision system which is inhumane and denies asylum seekers their basic rights and calls for its abolition and replacement with a system which respects the human rights of asylum seekers. In line with policy supported by the Migrant Rights Centre and other concerned NGOs”

This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.

De réir polasaithe lena dtacaíonn an tIonad um Chearta Imirceach agus eagraíochtaí neamhrialtasacha eile a bhfuil baint acu leis an gceist.”

Referendum on Students’ Union position on the decriminalisation of drugs for personal use.

On Thursday 3rd March you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not the Students’ Union condemns supports the decriminalisation of drugs solely for personal use.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:

“That NUI Galway Students’ Union actively supports the decriminalisation of drugs solely for personal use.”

This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.

Referendum on Students’ Union position on the legalisation and regulation of the cultivation, sale and possession of cannabis.

On Thursday 5th March 2015 you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not the Students’ Union adopts a position on the legalisation and regulation of the cultivation, sale and possession of cannabis.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:

That NUI Galway Student’s Union actively supports the legalisation and regulation of the cultivation, sale and possession of cannabis for adults age 18 and over.”

Referendum on Constitutional Amendment proposed by Students’ Union Executive Committee

On Thursday 12 March 2015 you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not to approve an amendment to article 17 of the Students’ Union Constitution as proposed by the Executive Committee.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following constitutional amendment which has been proposed by the Students’ Union Executive Committee:

At Article 17.C replace “Students Union Executive” with “the Board of Trustees as members of the Company”.

Delete Article 17.D in its entirety and re-designate the subsequent sub-articles accordingly.

At the end of the current Article 17.E (to be re-designated 17.D) insert the following new provision:

Once deemed elected, the incoming President of the Students’ Union shall be a non-voting attendee at the Board of Directors until s/he commence his/her term of office as President.

This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.

Déardaoin, an 12 Márta 2015, iarrfar ort vótáil i reifreann ar cibé acu a ghlacfaidh nó nach nglacfaidh togra chun Alt 17 Bhunreacht Comhaltas na Mac Léinn  a leasú a mhol Coiste Feidhmiúcháin.

Is mar seo a leanas a chuirfear an cheist ort ar an bpáipéar ballóide, agus beidh ortsa freagra Tá / Níl a thabhairt uirthi:

An bhfuil tú ag toiliú leis an togra chun an Bunreacht a leasú a mhol Coiste Feidhmiúcháin Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn:

Ag Alt 17.C, go gcuirfear “Bord na nIontaobhaithe mar chomhaltaí den Chuideachta” in ionad “Coiste Feidhmiúcháin Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn”.

Go scriosfar Alt 17.D ina iomláine agus go ndéanfar na fo-ailt ina dhiaidh a athuimhriú dá réir.

Go gcuirfear an fhoráil nua seo a leanas isteach ag deireadh Alt 17.E mar atá faoi láthair (a athuimhreofar mar 17.D):

“Beidh Uachtarán nuathofa Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn ina d(h)uine den lucht freastail gan cheart vótála ag cruinnithe de Bhord na Stiúrthóirí go dtí go gcuirfear tús lena t(h)éarma mar an Uachtarán.”

Referendum RFC14/1 (Position on Abortion)

This referendum will decide whether or not the Students’ Union adopts a neutral position with regard to abortion.
The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:
“That NUI Galway Students’ Union repeal the result of RFC13/1 (position on Abortion), which mandated the Students’ Union to adopt an active pro-choice position in relation to abortion.
Henceforth, the Students’ Union shall adopt a neutral position with regard to abortion.”

Referendum RFC14/2 (Position on the campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel)

This referendum will decide whether or not the Students’ Union adopts a position in support of the campaign of “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel”.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:
“That NUI Galway Students’ Union actively supports the campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel.”

Referendum RFC14/3 (Position on the Issue of Couples of the Same Gender Availing of Civil Marraige)

This referendum will decide whether or not the Students’ Union supports couples of the same gender to avail of civil marriage.
The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:

“That NUI Galway Students’ Union actively supports all measures that extend to homosexual couples the same rights enjoyed by heterosexual couples, including, but not limited to, supporting a referendum to amend Bunreacht na hÉireann to expressedly permit couples of the same gender to avail of civil marriage.”
