Students’ Union CÉIM Peer Learning Programme 10-Year Anniversary
The Students’ Union CÉIM academic peer learning programme is celebrating ten years of supporting 1st year students at University of Galway. CÉIM has been very successful at helping students to transition to third level education, make friends, succeed academically and progress to 2nd year.
Based on the internationally renowned Peer Assisted Learning model, CÉIM now offers weekly peer learning sessions to over 2,000 University of Galway students and this figure is growing all the time. Students meet in small groups with fellow 1st year students and trained student leaders from higher years to discuss coursework and have some fun. Feedback about the programme has been overwhelmingly positive and research shows that regular attendees attain higher grades on average in comparison to non-attendees.
Students’ Union President Sai Gujulla said: “CÉIM is unique within Irish higher education as it delivers peer learning at scale via a strong partnership between students, staff and the Students’ Union. We are delighted to now be celebrating ten years of this award-winning programme and look forward to CÉIM being rolled out to more 1st year students in the coming academic year and beyond.”
CÉIM Director Amber Walsh Olesen added: “From small beginnings, CÉIM has grown into a thriving network of learning communities, supporting students throughout their entire 1st year at university. None of this would be possible without the dedication and generosity of the CÉIM student leaders, who volunteer their time to encourage and support 1st year students.”

Tá ag éirí go han-mhaith le CÉIM chun cuidiú le mic léinn aistriú chuig oideachas tríú leibhéal, cairde a dhéanamh, rath acadúil a bhaint amach agus dul ar aghaidh go dtí an dara bliain.
Bunaithe ar shamhail na Foghlama Piarchuidithe a bhfuil cáil idirnáisiúnta uirthi, cuireann CÉIM seisiúin sheachtainiúla piarfhoghlama ar fáil do níos mó ná 2,000 mac léinn in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe agus tá an figiúr seo ag fás an t-am ar fad. Buaileann grúpaí beaga mac léinn le mic léinn céad bhliana eile agus le ceannairí mac léinn oilte sna blianta níos airde chun obair chúrsa a phlé agus beagán spraoi a bheith acu. Bíonn an t-aiseolas a fhaightear faoin gclár thar a bheith dearfach agus léiríonn taighde go bhfaigheann mic léinn a fhreastalaíonn ar na seisiúin go rialta gráid níos airde ar an meán i gcomparáid le mic léinn nach bhfreastalaíonn orthu.
Bhí an méid seo a leanas le rá ag Sai Gujulla, Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Gné uathúil d’ardoideachas na hÉireann is ea CÉIM toisc go gcuireann sé piarfhoghlaim mhórscála ar fáil trí chomhpháirtíocht láidir idir mic léinn, baill foirne agus Comhaltas na Mac Léinn. Tá lúcháir orainn a bheith ag ceiliúradh deich mbliana den chlár seo a bhfuil gradaim bainte amach aige, agus táimid ag tnúth le CÉIM a thairiscint do níos mó mac léinn céad bhliana sa bhliain acadúil atá romhainn agus ina dhiaidh sin.”
Dúirt Stiúrthóir CÉIM, Amber Walsh Olesen: “Thosaigh CÉIM amach mar chlár beag, ach is líonra rathúil de phobail foghlama é anois, líonra a thacaíonn le mic léinn ar feadh na chéad bhliana dóibh ar an ollscoil. Ní fhéadfadh sin tarlú gan dúthracht agus flaithiúlacht cheannairí mac léinn CÉIM, a thugann a gcuid ama go deonach chun mic léinn sa chéad bhliain a spreagadh agus tacú leo.”
