Comhairle notes
During CMLOnG events and times of the year, for example Raise and Give Week, Freshers etc, noise and sensory outputs can be more intrusive than average, either due to large crowds, loud acts or unsuitable acoustics in a venue. This can have negative consequences for students who live with sensory sensitivities, hearing loss or hearing disabilities, neurological disabilities and sensory processing issues, to only name a few examples
Comhairle also notes
Charity ventures such as Raise and Give Week are integral to the ethos and traditions of the union, and it is fair that events that are expected to attract large crowds, noise and attention are held on campus so as to raise the most amount for charity and boost campus spirit.
Comhairle finally notes
That every student in the university has the right to have a quiet space to study on campus. Further, no student should be impeded in attending events held by CMLOnG due to accessibility barriers, and the union has a responsibility to ensure that any barriers to accessibility are investigated and removed to the best of the unions power.
Comhairle therefore mandates
During the organisation and planning for CMLOnG events that are known to draw large crowds or centres around loud noise, particularly Raise and Give Week, the Vice President for Welfare and Equality will organise alternative sensory friendly venues at least, or sensory friendly / low sensory input alternative events for any students who cannot or do not want to attend the mainstream, high sensory input gatherings. This should be done in collaboration with the Disability Rights Officer, with information on how to make a space sensory friendly available through DSS, the Neurodivergent Society and/or the Neurodivergent Staff Network.
