Daltaí Tréitheacha – Gifted Pupils

NUI Galway student teachers from the Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas designed and delivered a series of resources, lessons and workshops for a group of gifted children in a Gaelscoil in Galway city in the language they use daily, Gaeilge. The workshops covered areas as diverse as Forensic Science, Code Breaking, Language Acquisition, Cultural Studies, Music and Dance, and the response from all involved was very enthusiastic.  Following the success of the EXPLORE project, the Máistir Gairmiúil san Oideachas programme is interested in expanding the scheme to more schools in Galway. Project Updates

[accordion] [accordion_item title=’9 January, 2014′]

We have had a further meeting to set out the timetable and focus of the workshops, which will take place during the four weeks beginning 10 February. The pupils in Scoil Iognáid will attend 8 workshops over the four weeks, each one to be 1.5 hours in duration. The students from the Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas will plan and deliver the workshops in pairs, so that they each give 4 workshops.

There are two strands:

  1. Science and Maths, incorporating problem solving, group work, experiments and independent learning,
  2. Language and Music, involving the pupils in language acquisition, music making, composing and practical work.

Our aim is  to have a concrete outcome from the workshops, in the form of video/recording/ibook chapters/writing/composition.

To date on the project “Daltaí le Cumas Eiceachtúil” we have had a couple of short meetings.

On 10/10/13 staff and students member of the team met briefly to ascertain the feasibility of the project and practical aspects, who, what, where etc.

On 20/11/13, staff and students met again to determine the ongoing process of the project and to plan a meeting with the Principal of the school which will be involved. This next meeting will take place in the next two weeks, and we will have a detailed outline of the project then – details of the workshops, the children involved, interests, subjects and procedure to be followed, and also a firm idea of when the workshops will take place.

It is likely that the workshops will not take place till the spring time, as our academic calendar is such that students involved with the project will be on teaching practice from the beginning of January till the middle of February.

So far, so good!
