Comhairle notes
That many placenames in Galway venerate instead of disabuse colonial rule imposed on Ireland.
Comhairle also notes
That the Union, through referendum, holds the policy of supporting the reunification of Ireland.
Comhairle believes
That decolonisation continues to be an ongoing process, which includes the renaming of places so as to not hold colonisers in high regard. Accordingly, Galway City Council should review placenames in Galway with a view to removing the high regard many people who were responsible for colonisation are held in.
Comhairle mandates
That where placenames in Galway venerate colonial rule imposed on Ireland, the Union should use alternative names, such as the placename in Irish where appropriate. A list of alternative placenames should be made available.
