Council Notes
That postgraduate students are the backbone of teaching in the university;
however, they are not afforded workers’ rights, a living wage, or any form of recognition.
Council Further Notes
The University of Galway stakes it reputation on academic excellence and
opportunity, even though the GTA agreement continues to restrain PGR’s and undermine them by reducing their ability to teach, despite PhD supervisors relying on them to teach regardless.
Council Believes
Warning incoming postgraduates about the working practices of the university is
of paramount importance, so they may have a full idea of what working under the GTA is like.
Council Mandates
That the PG Taught and Research Officers organise and conduct a protest on
behalf of the University of Galway Students’ Union at the next postgraduate open day ( Tuesday,
November 7th , 4pm-7pm) in conjunction with the Postgraduate Research Society, and the
Postgraduate Workers Organisation
