Volunteering
We all need a little help from time to time
If you’re interested in any of our upcoming campaigns just drop us a line studentsunion@universityofgalway.ie or call up. Sometimes you can get campaign t-shirts for helping and get other free goodies too.
If you are interested in Volunteering there are various options available.
FlirtFM (Campus Radio)
Flirt FM 101.3 is the award-winning student radio station for Galway city. Part of a 24 station national network of community radio stations, we’ve been broadcasting from University of Galway since September 1995 with three paid staff, the station is composed of up to 150 student volunteers (this is where you come in!)
On air weekdays throughout the year, we’re on FM 24hrs five days a week, and 70 hours a week during the holidays, with our webstream running the rest of the time.
So what do we sound like? Well, certainly not your average station. Flirt FM is by, of and for the third-level students of Galway; providing an alternative to locally available commercial radio. In fact, we’re the only dedicated alternative station in Ireland. In addition to tuning in on 101.3fm you can listen online and message us at flirtfm.ie, find us on TuneIn, Facebook, Twitter, Mixcloud, Snapchat and text us on 085 180 1013.
If you’re interested in volunteering, complete our online application form at flirtfm.ie/volunteers. Whether your interest lies in production, technical work, interviewing, promotion, research, editing or presenting we’d like to hear from you!
Working at the station has many perks; it’s a great social network, you can get an ALIVE certificate, and crucially, if you’d like to work in broadcast media the experience and skills you will pick up along the way are invaluable. Over the past 20 years our volunteers have gone on to work in media outlets all over the world, and so could you!

SIN Newspaper
As Galway’s only student newspaper, Sin provides the best opportunity for students to get involved in journalism, photography, design, and other areas of newspaper production. But why contribute? Well there are lots of reasons: there’s the chance to gain experience that will prove valuable and rewarding later on in your career, but also in many other aspects of life; you’ll meet new people, many of whom share some of your interests. There’s also the chance to work with a great group of contributors who’ll teach you invaluable information about the media; Sin provides its contributors with a wide audience, and finally you get your name in print, something that people in print journalism value the most. Sin has a print run of 6000, is out every two weeks, on average is about 28 pages long, and is distributed on campus as well as to many locations in Galway City. To get involved is easy, meetings are held every week, and all are welcome. Contact editor@sin.ie for more information.
Student Connect
Student Connect is a programme where students help students!
Do you remember how it felt to be a first year student? Did you find coming to University a daunting experience? Did you know who to ask if you had a difficulty? If the answer to these questions is yes then you could help us with our peer mentoring programme.
The aim of Student connect is to provide a friendly and caring introduction to University of Galway for first-year students through the facilitation of student-to-student help and encouragement. The benefits of the programme are two-fold: Students have an experienced student to contact if they encounter any difficulties and first year students meet a new group of friends. Your mentor is a 2nd or 3rd year student who has been in the same position as you and can answer and queries you have in relation to starting your new life in University.
How does Student Connect Work?
You will be allocated a mentor at orientation. After meeting our mentor they will bring you and your group on a campus tour and take you for a cup of coffee to chat about the University. Your mentor will give you their mobile number and email address and will contact you a important time throughout the year. They can introduce you into Clubs/Societies and you can contact them to discuss any issues that might be of concern to you. Your mentor will meet you and your group for a second time about 4 weeks into the first semester to check in with you and see how your are doing.
Access Centre
Would you like to help out at different events/activities and gain skills in communicating with various people, distributing information to potential applicants and assisting them. You will be able to add any hours you volunteer with the Access Centre to your ALIVE certificate.
The Access Centre consists of Access Programmes Office, Disability Office and Mature Students Office.
There are a number of events throughout the year which require volunteers.
Select the events that you would like to volunteer at by filling in our volunteer form.
