Movember – Coming to a Face Near You Soon!

Movember is coming back with a hairy bang to NUI Galway this November. 

The Official NUIG Movember Opening Party takes place at 7pm Wednesday 28thOctober 2015 in the College Bar

Get a nice, free, clean shave before you start your Movember journey to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. There will also be free finger food and some other surprises in store on the night. 

All Mo Bros and Mo Sistas Welcome. Over 18’s event. NUI Galway ID Required.

 

The Movember Foundation is a global charity committed to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. Since 2003, millions have joined the men’s health movement, raising €485 million and funding over 1,000 programmes focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

The NUI Galway Students’ Union/NUI Galway EXPLORE initiative is seeking applications from students and staff wishing to work in partnership on innovative new projects to benefit NUI Galway and/or the wider community.

Up to €900 is available per project.

This is a great way to turn an idea into reality, develop new skills, boost your CV, expand your network and much more!

The Entrepreneurship and Enactus societies at NUI Galway are running a brainstorming event aimed at stimulating creative and innovate idea generation ahead of the EXPLORE project deadline on 20 October. Ideas generated can be turned into projects for EXPLORE and Enactus competitions.
Anyone is welcome to attend who wants to be involved in making a sustainable difference through innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. It will be an interactive event with mentors from academia and business, so come and be part of the action!

Christmas in November and a Llama as NUI Galway Students’ Union launch year of Fundraising!

NUI Galway Students’ Union will be supporting Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society this year. Every year the Students’ Union selects two charities that benefit from its fundraising initiatives. This year’s fundraising events will include a Christmas Day fundraiser in November and a pet farm visit with star of the show Kuzco the Llama in December!

Students’ Union President Phelim Kelly said: “We are delighted to be supporting two very worthy charities this year. Students in NUI Galway have a very proud tradition of fundraising for charity. We hope to improve on last year’s total of €12,500 raised during the year”

Galway Rape Crisis Centre offer emotional and practical support to survivors of rape, sexual violence and abuse via a help line, face to face counselling, training and education services.

Cyril Connole of Galway Rape Crisis Centre said: “Galway Rape Crisis Centre is delighted and honoured to have been chosen as one of the NUI Galway Students’ Union nominated charities for 2015/2016. NUI Galway Students’ Unions commitment in working towards the betterment of every member of society will provide the necessary and vital help the GRCC needs.”

The Irish Cancer Society aim to improve the lives of those affected by cancer.

John McCormack, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society said: “We are delighted to be chosen as a charity partner for NUI Galway Students’ Union. As an independent charity, we rely on the public to support the work which we do in providing free services to cancer patients in Galway and across the country. One in three people in Ireland will now get cancer with incidence on the increase so demand for our services continues to grow.”

NUI Galway Students’ Union Raises €12,500 for Console and BeLonG To

NUI Galway Students’ Union Raises €12,500 for Console and BeLonG To

NUI Galway Students’ Union organised a wide array of charity events over the 2014/15 academic year. Students took part in aquathons, Croagh Patrick climbs, cake sales, table quizzes, a Christmas day in November, comedy gigs, calendar sales, pet farm visits and collection days to raise €12,500 for charity in the process!

All of the money raised from these events has been donated to the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2014/15 – Console and BeLonG To.

Applications are now CLOSED for charities to apply to be the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2015/16. 

Declan Higgins, Students’ Union President said:

“Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, students have once again done their bit to help others. NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities and they have excelled themselves this year.”

Margaret Tierney, Project Development Manager of Console said:

“We are indebted to NUI Galway Students’ Union for choosing Console as one of their charity partners, thereby raising awareness of the work of the Console Suicide Prevention and Bereavement Charity. We are always there to help when you are going through a difficult time and our free helpline 1800 247 247 operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week.”

David Carroll, Executive Director of BeLonG To said: “We’re delighted to be one of this year’s chosen charities by NUI Galway’s Students Union. The support of allies like the students of NUIG is vital to our work to eliminate homophobic & transphobic bullying and support those lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people and their families and to build a fairer more equal Ireland”

The objective of this project is to make the NUI Galway campus observatory available to students, expand the interest of the student body in astronomy, and provide extra students with experience and training on the state of the art 3D visualisation suite and on-campus observatory.

This project will develop a database of biographies of UCG students who served in British forces (and if feasible US and other forces) in World War One.
