Students’ Union Leaders Appeal for Compassion from NUI Galway

News

Students’ Union Leaders Appeal for Compassion from NUI Galway

Students’ Union leaders from USI, UCC, Trinity, GMIT and Maynooth have together written to the NUI Galway President and Vice-President to voice their concern about the University’s opposition to the introduction of policies that will support students undertaking assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic. This appeal for more compassionate policies echoes continued calls from NUI Galway Students’ Union for the University to provide additional flexibility in assessments this year.

Specific policies that have been introduced in other Universities include:

  • The option to retake passed exams without charge where students felt they could have achieved a better mark.
  • Removal of repeat exam fees.

A recent survey of over 4,000 NUI Galway students found that “54.9% were unsure that they would get a Graduate job offer”. The opportunity to have free resits of both passed and failed exams would ensure the graduating class to 2021 have a better chance of finding a job without the COVID-19 taking more from their futures.

Union of Students in Ireland (USI) represent 374,000 students across the island of Ireland and USI President Lorna Fitzpatrick said: “We hope that the opportunities that other colleges such as UCC, Trinity & Maynooth have introduced would also be introduced in NUI Galway  with the aim of providing a consistent approach to students across the sector.  We recognise the measures introduced to date, and welcome same, however, we do not believe they provide sufficient supports for students during this time.”

Students’ Union President Pádraic Toomey added: “We are particularly worried about our final year students as they will go out into the workforce and compete with students from UCC, Trinity and Maynooth. We need a level playing field where all students are offered equal opportunities to get the best possible results in these extremely trying circumstances. The continued refusal of NUI Galway to remove the exorbitant €295 repeat exam fee is putting huge stress on our students who are already at breaking point.”

What do I do if…

I experience symptoms:

  • If you have any of the following COVID-19 symptoms – high temperature (38°C or higher), a cough, difficulty breathing, a change or loss of your sense of smell or taste – you must act quickly. Stay at home or isolate on campus. Phone the Student Health Unit on (091) 492604 or fill out their online screening form or phone your local GP. Describe your symptoms and follow the doctor’s instructions.

I receive a positive COVID-19 diagnosis:

  • Follow public health advice. You will need to self-isolate and your close contacts will need to get tested and restrict their movements.
  • You should contact the University confidentially (either by emailing COVID-19@nuigalway.ie or contacting lecturer/administrator). This will enable the University to offer support.

I discover my classmate has had a positive COVID-19 diagnosis:

  • If you are a close contact of someone who tested positive for COVID-19, you need to get tested for COVID-19 and restrict your movements for 14 days – even if your test comes back negative. See the difference between a ‘close’ and ‘casual’ contact on the HSE website.

I discover my housemate has had a positive COVID-19 diagnosis:

  • You are considered a close contact. You need to get tested for COVID-19 and restrict your movements for 14 days – even if your test comes back negative.

Students’ Union Welcomes NUIG Turnaround on student accommodation payments

News

Students’ Union Welcomes NUIG Turnaround on student accommodation payments

NUI Galway Students’ Union has today welcomed the University’s decision to provide refunds to students who no longer wish to take up spaces in on-campus student accommodation for 2020/21. Many students booked accommodation at the Corrib Village and Goldcrest developments on the basis that they were told by the University they would have on campus teaching hours this semester. The students subsequently discovered they would have no teaching time or very limited hours which didn’t justify their outlay on the accommodation.

NUI Galway Students’ Union took up the campaign on behalf of these students and their families with the University. Campus Living who run the two developments on behalf of the University yesterday evening confirmed that they would be “entitled to a refund if they decide not to proceed with their booking due to having less time on campus than originally planned.”

Students’ Union President Pádraic Toomey said: “We are delighted that the University has listened to the student body and reversed their earlier decision. We are all facing a very uncertain future with the current global pandemic. Adding any extra financial pressures to students and their families is not acceptable. Now is a time to be flexible and compassionate. The national Education For All campaign launched this week highlights the pressing need for a publicly financed student accommodation building strategy and charter for student tenant rights.”

Students’ Union Welfare and Equality Officer Róisín Nic Lochlainn added: “We hope that other student accommodation providers and landlords in Galway will follow the University’s lead and provide refunds to students who no longer need accommodation. Many students and their families had to make tough decisions to book accommodation with incomplete information about how much time they would actually be on campus. Now that the picture is finally becoming clearer our students are finding themselves stuck with accommodation they can’t afford and no jobs available for them to pay the rent.”
