Students’ Union Invite Applications to Annual Charity Fund

NUI Galway Students’ Union has opened the application process for Charities wishing to be considered as beneficiaries for its annual fundraising campaign for 2022/23. Last year students ran a series of events including a giant Christmas Raffle, a Taylor Swift night, saucy Sex Toy Bingo, charity Take Me Out, table quizzes, and a Sports Day. They raised €11,000 for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and BeLonG To Youth Services.

Application forms for the 2022/23 fund are available from the Students’ Union website here: NUIG SU Charity Application Form 2022 and the closing date for applications is 5pm Monday 29th of August 2022. Please note that any canvassing will automatically disqualify your charity from this process.

Students’ Union Vice-President/Welfare and Equality Officer Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer said: “Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities. This year we hope to raise even more money for good causes with our Charity events. These events will encourage our students to get involved in helping their community whilst also making friends and having fun.”

New Students’ Union President Takes Office

Sai Gujulla has taken up the role of President of NUI Galway Students’ Union which is the representative group of over 19,000 students. Sai, a biomedical engineering student, was elected by his peers earlier this year and has now taken the reins in the Students’ Union. He held the role of Convenor of the College of Science and Engineering with the SU last year.

Sai follows in the footsteps of President Michael D Higgins who was the NUI Galway Students’ Union President back in 1964. He will be working closely with the other SU Officers including the Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer, the Vice President/Education Officer Joe Mee and the Vice President for the Irish Language Barry Ó Siochrú.

Students’ Union President Sai Gujulla said: “I am delighted to take up this prestigious role representing the students of NUI Galway. It will be another challenging year as we are in the midst of a Cost of Living Crisis but myself and the other SU Officers will be working hard this year for our students. NUI Galway students will need extra support in these testing circumstances to ensure that they have the best possible student experience. We are here for our students and are ready to defend their rights.”

Uachtarán nua ar Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn tar éis dul i mbun oifige

Sai Gujulla tar éis dul i mbun oifige mar Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh, an grúpa ionadaíoch do bhreis agus 19,000 mac léinn. Mac léinn innealtóireachta bithleighis é Sai. Toghadh a chomh-mhic léinn ní ba luaithe sa bhliain é agus tá sé anois tar éis teacht i gceannas ar an gComhaltas. Ba é Tionólaí Choláiste na hEolaíochta agus na hInnealtóireachta leis an gComhaltas anuraidh.

Tá Sai ag déanamh mar a rinne an tUachtarán Mícheál D. Ó hUigínn roimhe, a bhí ina uachtarán ar Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh siar in 1964. Beidh sé ag obair as lámha a chéile le hOifigigh eile an Chomhaltais, lena n-áirítear Leas-Uachtarán/An tOifigeach Leasa agus Comhionannais, Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer, Leas-Uachtarán/An tOifigeach Oideachais, Joe Mee, agus Leas-Uachtarán/Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Barry Ó Siochrú.

Bhí an méid seo a leanas le rá ag Sai Gujulla, Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Tá an-áthas orm glacadh leis an ról iontach tábhachtach seo ag déanamh ionadaíochta do mhic léinn OÉ Gaillimh. Tá bliain dhúshlánach eile i ndán dúinn toisc go bhfuil muid i lár Géarchéim Costais Maireachtála, ach is féidir talamh slán a dhéanamh de go mbeidh mé féin agus na hOifigigh eile ag obair go dian ar son na mac léinn go léir. Beidh tacaíocht bhreise ag teastáil ó mhic léinn OÉ Gaillimh ag an am crua seo lena chinntiú go mbeidh siad in ann an leas is fearr is féidir a bhaint as saol an mhic léinn. Is ar mhaithe leis na mic léinn atá muid agus tá muid faoi réir lena gcearta a chosaint.

Events held over the year included a giant Christmas Raffle, a Taylor Swift night, saucy Sex Toy Bingo, charity Take Me Out, table quizzes, and a Sports Day. €11,000 Tiomsaithe ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn ar son Carthanachta

Inniu bhronn Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh airgead a bailíodh le bliain anuas ar Ionad Éigeandála na Gaillimhe um Éigniú agus ar Sheirbhísí Óige BeLonG To. Bailíodh €11,000 san iomlán don dá charthanas ag imeachtaí carthanachta ar leith a bhí ar siúl le linn na bliana.

I measc na n-imeachtaí bhí Crannchur Ollmhór na Nollag, Oíche Taylor Swift, Biongó Gnéasbhréagán, Take Me Out ar son carthanachta, tráth na gceist, agus Lá Spóirt. Eagraíodh díolacháin leabhar, cístí agus éadaí chomh maith. Chabhraigh na himeachtaí seo le pobal OÉ Gaillimh fanacht gníomhach gnóthach agus airgead a bhailiú ar son dhá chúis mhaithe ag an am céanna.

Bhí an méid seo le rá ag Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Róisín Nic Lochlainn: “Bhí an-ghlacadh leis na himeachtaí i mbliana agus chabhraigh siad ar fad linn cur le chéile ar an gcampas.  Tá traidisiún na carthanachta go smior i mic léinn OÉ Gaillimh agus tá gaisce déanta acu arís i mbliana.”

Dúirt Clodagh McGivern, Leasuachtarán de chuid an Chomhaltais/an tOifigeach Oideachais: “Cé gur bliain acadúil strusmhar a bhí ann, is iontach an rud é go ndearna mic léinn OÉ Gaillimh a seacht ndícheall airgead a bhailiú le cabhrú le daoine eile. Tá ríméad orainn €11,000 a bhronnadh ar an dá charthanas iontacha seo a thugann cúnamh nach beag do dhaoine in am an ghátair. Is éacht ollmhór é gur éirigh leo siúd a bhí páirteach an méid sin airgid a thiomsú.”
