Students’ Union Announce Charity Partners
University of Galway Students’ Union today announced their charity partners for the 2022/23 academic year who are Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Galway Simon Community. The Union will be holding fundraising events throughout the year on behalf of the two charities.
Students’ Union President Sai Gujulla said: “We are very excited to raise much needed funds for these two amazing charities. Over the academic year our events will help our students and staff to feel part of the University community, volunteer, have fun and keep active while fundraising.”
Cathy Connolly, Executive Director of Galway Rape Crisis Centre said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by the Students’ Union as one of their nominated charities for this year. Many University of Galway students have been part of our volunteer fundraising team in the past and we are ever grateful for the Students’ Unions continued support. This initiative will help us to offer counselling to our crisis clients and reduce our waiting list, thereby strengthening our impact and fulfil our mission of ending cultural and societal tolerance of sexual violence through advocacy, awareness raising and education programmes. “
Aisling O’Hara Galway Simon Community said: “Galway Simon Community are delighted to have been nominated as one of University of Galway Students’ Union two charities for the coming year. With an increase of 25% in the number of 18-25-year olds experiencing or at risk of homelessness, vital funds are needed to support these young adults and help them from falling into cyclical homelessness. Funds will be used for targeted trauma informed supports, which are designed to build resilience and keep these young adults connected to their local communities.”

Galway Rape Crisis Centre is dedicated to providing a professional, caring and confidential counselling and support service for those in our community affected by sexual abuse and sexual violence.

Beidh imeachtaí tiomsaithe airgid á reáchtáil ag an gComhaltas i rith na bliana ar mhaithe leis an dá charthanas.
Bhí an méid seo a leanas le rá ag Sai Gujulla, Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Táimid ar bís chun cistí a bhfuil géarghá leo a thiomsú don dá charthanas seo a dhéanann obair iontach. Le linn na bliana acadúla, cuideoidh na himeachtaí tiomsaithe sin le mic léinn agus le foireann na hollscoile mothú go bhfuil siad páirteach i bpobal na hOllscoile, obair dheonach a dhéanamh, spraoi a bheith acu agus a bheith gníomhach fad a thiomsaíonn siad airgead.”
Dúirt Cathy Connolly, Stiúrthóir Feidhmiúcháin Ionad Éigeandála na Gaillimhe um Éigniú: “Tá an-áthas orainn gur roghnaigh Comhaltas na Mac Léinn sinne mar cheann dá gcarthanais ainmnithe i mbliana. Is iomaí mac léinn ó Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, a bhí mar chuid dár bhfoireann dheonach tiomsaithe airgid san am atá caite agus táimid buíoch de shíor as an tacaíocht leanúnach a fhaighimid ó Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn. Leis an tionscnamh seo, cuideofar linn comhairleoireacht a thairiscint dár gcliaint atá i ngéarchéim agus ár liosta feithimh a laghdú, rud a neartóidh an tionchar atá againn agus rud a chuideoidh linn ár misean a chomhlíonadh, eadhon deireadh a chur leis an nglacadh le foréigean gnéis sa chultúr agus sa tsochaí trí abhcóideacht, ardú feasachta agus cláir oideachais.“
Dúirt Aisling O’Hara, Pobal Shíomóin na Gaillimhe: “Tá ríméad ar Phobal Shíomóin na Gaillimhe a bheith ainmnithe mar cheann de dhá charthanas Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe don bhliain seo amach romhainn. Tá méadú 25% tagtha ar líon na ndaoine idir 18-25 bliana d’aois atá gan dídean nó atá i mbaol a bheith gan dídean, rud a fhágann go bhfuil géarghá le cistí chun tacú leis na haosaigh óga seo agus chun cuidiú leo easpa dídine timthriallach a sheachaint. Úsáidfear na cistí le haghaidh tacaíochtaí spriocdhírithe trámathreoraithe, atá ceaptha chun athléimneacht a fhorbairt agus na haosaigh óga sin a choimeád i gceangal lena bpobal áitiúil.”
Nótaí i dtaca le Carthanais Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn 2022/23, OÉ Gaillimh:
Tá Ionad Éigeandála na Gaillimhe um Éigniú tiomanta ó thaobh seirbhís ghairmiúil, rúnda cúraim agus tacaíochta a chur ar fáil dóibh siúd sa phobal atá buailte ag an mí-úsáid gnéis agus foréigean gnéasach.
Cuireann Pobal Shíomóin na Gaillimhe seirbhísí tacaíochta agus lóistín ar fáil do dhaoine atá gan dídean nó atá i mbaol a bheith gan dídean in Iarthar na hÉireann.

PRESS RELEASE Monday 26th September 2022
Students’ Union to Sleep Out to Highlight Accommodation Crisis
University of Galway Students’ Union will be holding an accommodation protest and sleep out at Eyre Square this Wednesday 28th of September. The protest will leave University of Galway campus at 6pm and make its way to Eyre Square where there will be speeches before the students set up camp for the night.
The Union is calling on the Government and Galway City Council to come up with urgent solutions for the huge numbers of Galway students who are currently homeless. The sleep out protest aims to draw attention to the plight of the many students who can’t find housing.
Students’ Union President Sai Gujulla said: “We already know of students who are returning to their home countries and dropping out of their courses because they have not been able to find accommodation. We have students living in cars and hostels or commuting huge distances or paying extortionate rent and this is unacceptable. Students can’t study and work under these conditions.”
Students’ Union Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer added: “We are getting hundreds of emails and phone calls every day from students and their families who are desperately seeking housing. It’s heart breaking to hear the circumstances that students are finding themselves in. There’s also been an increase in accommodation fraud which is adding to this nightmare situation.”

PREASEISIÚINT Dé Luain, an 26 Meán Fómhair 2022
Comhaltas na Mac Léinn le Codladh Amach chun Aird a Tharraingt ar Ghéarchéim Lóistín
Beidh agóid faoi lóistín á reáchtáil ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe agus codlóidh siad amach ar an bhFaiche Mhór Dé Céadaoin seo chugainn, an 28 Meán Fómhair. Fágfaidh lucht na hagóide campas Ollscoil na Gaillimhe ar 6pm agus déanfaidh siad a mbealach go dtí an Fhaiche Mhór áit a dtabharfar óráidí sula ndéanann na mic léinn campa don oíche.
Tá an Comhaltas ag iarraidh ar an Rialtas agus ar Chomhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe teacht ar réitigh phráinneacha don líon mór mac léinn i nGaillimh atá gan dídean faoi láthair. Tá sé mar aidhm ag an agóid um chodladh amach aird a tharraingt ar chruachás an iliomad mac léinn nach féidir leo tithíocht a fháil.
Bhí an méid seo a leanas le rá ag Sai Gujulla, Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Is eol dúinn go bhfuil mic léinn ag scor dá gcúrsaí agus ag filleadh ar a gcontaetha dúchais toisc nach raibh siad in ann lóistín a fháil. Tá mic léinn ag cónaí i gcarranna agus i mbrúnna óige, nó ag comaitéireacht achair ollmhóra, nó tá cíos ríchostasach á íoc acu agus ní féidir glacadh leis sin. Ní féidir le mic léinn bheith ag staidéar agus ag obair faoi na coinníollacha sin.”
Dúirt Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer, Leas-Uachtarán agus Oifigeach Leasa agus Comhionannais an Chomhaltais: “Tá na céadta ríomhphost agus glaonna gutháin á bhfáil againn gach lá ó mhic léinn a bhfuil a seacht ndícheall á dhéanamh acu teacht ar thithíocht, agus óna dteaghlaigh. Briseadh croí atá ann cloisteáil faoi na cúinsí ina bhfuil mic léinn á n-aimsiú féin. Tá méadú tagtha ar chalaois i gcúrsaí lóistín freisin, rud a dhéanann an scéal uafásach seo níos measa fós.”
