Press Release: Students’ Union Launch Wasted Week

University of Galway Students’ Union today launched their Wasted Week which will run 29th-2nd February. The week will look at environmental issues such as food waste, recycling, litter and fast fashion. The Union is collaborating with a number of groups from the University of Galway to highlight these issues throughout the week.

There will be an upcycling clothes workshop with Bród Society where students can learn how to give their clothes a new lease of life. A waste free pot luck will see students bringing in their leftovers to cook a zero food waste feast. On Friday students will be doing a beach clean up to make Galway a cleaner, greener place.

Students’ Union President Dean Kenny said: “We are delighted to be hosting our second Wasted Week to encourage our students to become more sustainable and environmentally conscious. Many of our students are turning away from fast fashion so it’s great to be able to show then new ways to upcycle old clothing.”

Students’ Union Environmental and Sustainability Officer Molly Hickey added:

“It’s fantastic to have the support of our student societies for Wasted week. University of Galway students are very climate conscious and want to play their part in making Galway and the world a better place for us all”

SU Firewalk

News

Raise and Give Week Firewalk

Firewalking? What’s that?

Yes, it’s all about walking on fire! The Firewalk is an age-old ritual for bringing about change and transformation, breaking through fears and bringing fresh energy into your life.  A Firewalk gives you the opportunity to experience your own courage and potential in an exhilarating event. All that, and you can make a huge difference by raising funds for the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Cancer Care West.

When is the firewalk?

The Raise and Give Week Firewalk will take place from 6.30pm on Monday 12th of February 2024 in the Quad at University of Galway.

What happens at a firewalk?

Registration will take place 6pm-6.30pm and the event will finish up around 10.30pm.  After introductions, we will light the fire together, and the evening’s magic begins! While the fire transforms itself into glowing hot coals, we will spend the evening working with a range of techniques and activities prepare you for the firewalk.  The grand finale is of course the act of walking over the red hot coals – an experience you will remember for the rest of your life!

Isn’t it dangerous?

Firewalking is a metaphor for life.  When we step forward to do something we’ve never done before, we run the risk of discomfort, disappointment, or even pain.  The firewalk instructor leading you through the workshop has participated and led countless firewalks over the last 20 years, with thousands of participants, and it is very rare for anyone to experience anything more uncomfortable than an occasional small blister (or ‘fire kiss’).  However, the power of the firewalk lies in the fact that it is an inherently risky activity, and the power of your experience partly hinges on your willingness to take a risk in order to make a change and experience a new reality.  You will be asked to sign a liability waiver form as part of the workshop, and will be taking responsibility for your own choices and wellbeing.  Everyone decides for themselves whether to walk the fire, and when to do so, so be assured that you will not be coerced into doing anything that doesn’t feel right to you.

How do I sign up?

Fill out the registration form HERE and set up your iDonate fundraising page HERE.

Please Note: You need to fundraise a minimum of €150 to take part in the event and spaces are very limited. Deadline to raise the €150 is Thursday 8th February 2024. There will be a prize for the top fundraiser!

SU Statement on Anti-Semitism

News
Comhaltas na Mac Léinn Ollscoil na Gaillimhe Statement on Anti-Semitism (voted on in SU Executive Committee 20/11/23)

University of Galway Students’ Union are deeply concerned with the rise of antisemitism which we have seen on campus and in our community in general. We acknowledge that this rise in hate for the Jewish community may stem from individuals and groups misunderstanding or being uneducated on the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

We, the Union, support and represent all of our student body, regardless of ethnicity, race, religion or any other minority background. We condemn all forms of hate and wish to highlight the large difference between the Jewish community and the Israeli Government as a political body. We do not tolerate any form of antisemitism or discrimination based on religion or faith. We urge all of our student body to become educated on the ongoing genocide, through credible sources and media, such as Amnesty International.

Supports and services are open to all students, and we encourage any student who has experienced discrimination or hate to reach out for support, and to report the incident on the anonymous reporting tool, SpeakOut. We welcome the Jewish community in the University of Galway and strive to help and represent all students.
