Students’ Union Invite Applications to Annual Charity Fund
University of Galway Students’ Union has opened the application process for Charities wishing to be considered as beneficiaries for its annual fundraising campaign for 2023/24. Last year students ran a series of events including a giant Christmas Raffle, a Taylor Swift night, saucy Sex Toy Bingo, charity Take Me Out, head shaves, table quizzes, a Drag Race and a Sports Day. They raised €19,000 for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Galway Simon Community.
Application forms for the fund are available from the Students’ Union website HERE: Uni of Galway SU Charity Applicaiton Form 2023 and the closing date for applications is 5pm Monday 28th of August 2023. Please note that any canvassing will automatically disqualify your charity from this process.
Students’ Union President Dean Kenny said: “Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, University Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities. This year we hope to raise even more money for good causes with our Charity events including Raise and Give Week. These events will encourage our students to get involved in helping their community whilst also making friends and having fun.”

New Students’ Union President Takes Office
Dean Kenny has taken up the role of President of University of Galway Students’ Union which is the representative group of over 19,000 students. Dean, a Maths and Education Graduate from Belcarra, Co. Mayo, was elected by his peers earlier this year and has now taken the reins in the Students’ Union.
Dean follows in the footsteps of President Michael D Higgins who was the University of Galway Students’ Union President back in 1964. He will be working closely with the other SU Officers including the Vice President/Welfare and Equality Officer Izzy Tiernan, the Vice President/Education Officer Raimey O’Boyle and the Vice President for the Irish Language Faye Ní Dhomhnaill.
Students’ Union President Dean Kenny said: “I am delighted to take up this prestigious role representing the students of University of Galway. It will be another challenging year as the cost of living and accommodation issues continue to have an impact on students but myself and the other SU Officers will be working hard this year for our members. University of Galway students will need extra support in these testing circumstances to ensure that they have the best possible university experience. We are here for our students and are ready to defend their rights.”

- A recheck is simply a re-calculation of all parts of the module mark and there is NO review of the exam content.

South Africa has one of the highest incidence rates of sexual assault globally, however, in certain communities a bra represents status and the simple act of wearing one can drastically decrease the chances of sexual assault for a woman. An Mheitheal Rothar- Unused Bikes Wanted – An Mheitheal Rothar, a social enterprise based on campus, are looking for donations of any unused bikes/bikes in need of repair as part of their Recycle Your Cycle initiative. The bikes will be repaired and either sold in our shop or donated to Ukrainian refugees/University of Sanctuary students. You can find out more about the initiative HERE. Before the Exam
- We all learn differently, try different study methods and find out what works for you.
- Focus and systematically work through each topic, question by question.
- Do past exam papers and practice questions.
- If you need help with a topic – reach out to your classmates or your lecturer.
- Know when your exams are – check out your personalised timetable on the University of Galway exams website.
- Know what type of exam you will be sitting – open book, MCQ, 2 hour written paper etc. if you are unsure – ASK.
During the Exam
- Take time to settle yourself and BREATHE
- Read all questions carefully.
- Leave time to review your paper at the end.
- Set time allocations for each question and move on once the time elapses.
Minding Yourself
- Take regular breaks during study.
- Avoid burn out, sleep well, keep active and allow yourself to take time off.
- Eat healthy
- Set personal goals.
- Take each day as it comes – don’t be disheartened if you have a bad exam or study isn’t going well.
If something goes wrong
- If you lose your Student ID card you can buy a new one for €20 at the Student Registry Help Desk in Áras Uí Chathail
- If something goes wrong that is outside of your control that means you cannot attend your exam you can defer your exam to August and your result will not be capped. A list of who to contact if you need to defer can be found here
- If you fail an exam, you will have an opportunity to appeal the result
- If you fail an exam there will be an opportunity for you to resist the exam in August (first-year excluded) the grade for the repeat will be capped at 40%
