Tin Whistle Course
Join the SU Tin Whistle group “The Whistleblowers” this semester. Suitable for total beginners.
Learn Traditional and Contemporary songs on the Tin Whistle at weekly group lessons.
Class Dates/Times: 7pm Wednesday 25th October – Wednesday 29th November 2023.
Course Venue: The Space (Week 1-4), Small Acoustic Room (Weeks 5 & 6)
Course Cost: €10 for 6 Week Course (tin whistle not included you need to buy this yourself)
PLEASE NOTE: You will need to buy your own Feadóg tin whistle in the key of D. Cost is €6/€7 and is available in the following shops in Galway city :Powell’s, Opus 2, IT Music, and Kieran Maloney’s.
Course Content:
Week 1 The Space upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn
Introduction to the tin whistle, its notes, possibilities, limits, etc. and to familiarise the learners with the basics of playing the instrument, (basic scale and some practice tips).
Depending on their picking up of this we will likely already begin learning our first tune together, “Fainne Geal an Lae” (a beginner-friendly march that is mostly all in the low octave on the whistle).
Question and answer time and then review and wrap-up.
Week 2 The Space upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn
Review and “check-in” of their progress and overall growing confidence.
Use the opportunity to iron out any basic errors in breathing and covering the holes etc..
I will then introduce playing notes in the upper octave and practise “jumping the octave scale practice”.
To reinforce this in their playing I will introduce them playing the “Kerry Polka” which is a perfect tune for alternating between the octaves on the whistle and getting used to the breath pressure needed for playing back and forth between the different notes cleanly.
Question and answer time and then review and wrap-up.
Week 3 The Space upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn
Review and “check-in” of their progress and overall growing confidence.
Give time for questions and answers.
I will talk to them then more deeply now about what Irish tunes are, (what makes a jig a jig, a hornpipe a hornpipe, and a reel a reel, for example). I will pay them examples of each and talk about how the whistle can be used to not only play these tunes but how it fits in with other instruments when playing in a pub session.
I will then introduce them to playing our first jig together, ¨Out on the Ocean”.
Question and answer time and then review and wrap-up.
Week 4 The Space upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn
Review and “check-in” of their progress and overall growing confidence.
Review the three tunes above they have already been introduced to together, reinforce how far they have already come, and iron out any lingering issues executing the basics.
I will then introduce them to playing our first hornpipe together, “The Boys of Blue Hill”.
Question and answer time and then review and wrap-up.
Week 5 The Small Acoustic Room downstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn
Review and “check-in” of their progress and overall growing confidence.
Introduce them to the basics of ornamentation when playing the whistle (cuts, taps, rolls etc.)
Show them how they can practise these ornaments during their scale warm-ups from now on in the future.
Show them how these ornaments can be incorporated into the tunes they have already learned by playing them for them without ornamentation, and then with ornamentation.
Take time then to encourage them to try incorporating some of these ornaments to these tunes they have already learned by practising them together with ornaments.
I will then introduce them to playing our first reel together, “The Coal Miner’s”, (a reel that is beginner-friendly but also allows them to immediately incorporate ornaments).
Question and answer time and then review and wrap-up.
Week 6 The Small Acoustic Room downstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn
Review and “check-in” of their progress and overall growing confidence.
Quickly reinforce, and play along with them, the Irish tunes they have learned already, a march, a polka, a jig, a hornpipe, and a reel!
Instill in them the confidence that they can have a lifetime ahead of enjoying playing the tin whistle and Irish music.

PRESS RELEASE
Free Period Product Initiative Launched at University of Galway
University of Galway and University of Galway Students’ Union have launched a pilot programme distributing free period products across campus to tackle the issue of period poverty among students and staff.
The pilot stems from an initiative that was launched by the Students’ Union in 2017 to address the serious financial pressures and taboos faced by students who menstruate.
The University is now funding and supporting the pilot programme to supply more free items in locations across campus for those who need them.
The high cost of period products and the societal stigma which can still be attached to menstruation can lead to exclusion, mental health impacts and the use of unsuitable alternatives by those who menstruate. This programme aims to combat these issues and foster an inclusive, open campus with access for all.
Students’ Union Vice President/Welfare Officer Izzy Tiernan said: “Period poverty and hygiene poverty are very real issues for our 19,000 student members. We are delighted that the University is supporting this pilot programme. We are calling on the Government to act now on the “Period Poverty in Ireland Report” from February 2021. Students have enough financial worries as it is with the cost of living crisis and spiraling rents, and we firmly believe the Government needs to mitigate the cost of these essential healthcare products for all.”
Josephine Walsh, Head of Student Engagement at University of Galway, said: “Student Services at the University are delighted to be able to support the Students’ Union on this important initiative and policy for students. It is symbolic recognition by the University of the very real issues that our students face and even moreso we know it will make a very real difference in their lives.”
University of Galway Deputy President and Registrar Professor Pól Ó Dochartaigh said: “We are proud of the initiative that was taken by our students and their representatives, and as a University we are delighted that we are able to follow their lead and support efforts to alleviate cost and the effects of period poverty. Our new policy of free period products at University of Galway is a strong symbol of progress and how we can work together, with our students, to ensure better outcomes and respond to need.”

Fáilte á Cur ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn roimh Iarratais ar an gCiste Bliantúil Carthanachta
Tá Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe ag glacadh le hiarratais anois ó Charthanais ar mian leo a n-ainm a chur sa rith le haghaidh an fheachtais bhliantúil tiomsaithe airgid do 2023/24. I measc na n-imeachtaí a d’eagraigh mic léinn anuraidh bhí Crannchur Ollmhór na Nollag, Oíche Taylor Swift, Biongó Gnéasbhréagán, Take Me Out ar son carthanachta, tráth na gceist, Rás Draig agus Lá Spórt. Bhailigh siad €19,000 d’Ionad Éigeandála na Gaillimhe um Éigniú agus do Chlann Shíomóin na Gaillimhe.
Tá foirmeacha iarratais ar an gciste le fáil ó láithreán gréasáin Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, www.su.universityofgalway.ie, agus ní mór iarratais a chur isteach faoi 5 i.n., Dé Luain, an 28 Lúnasa 2023. Tabhair faoi deara go ndéanfar do charthanas a dhícháiliú go huathoibríoch má dhéantar aon iarracht canbhasáil ar a shon.
Dúirt Dean Kenny, Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Tá traidisiún na carthanachta go smior i mic léinn Ollscoil na Gaillimhe d’ainneoin na gciorruithe uile agus na ndúshlán a bhíonn le sárú acu gach uile lá. Tá súil againn níos mó airgid ná riamh a bhailiú i mbliana ar son cúiseanna maithe trínár nImeachtaí Carthanachta, An tSeachtain um Bailiú agus Bronnadh ina measc. Spreagfaidh na himeachtaí seo ár gcuid mac léinn lena gcion féin a dhéanamh ar son a bpobal, chomh maith le cairde nua a dhéanamh agus spraoi a bheith acu ag an am céanna.”
