  • What they CAN’T take: CDs / DVDs; Electrical Equipment; Children’s + Baby Equipment; Flooring; Toys; Duvets/Pillows; Mattresses; Curtain Poles; Exercise Equipment
  • What they CAN take: Clothing; Sheets; Duvet/Pillow Covers; Towels; Hats, scarfs and gloves; All types of shoes; Books but not college books; Kitchen utensils; Jewellery; Jigsaw and boxed games

 

Other Donation Opportunities

  • Lab Coat and Goggle Donation Drive – Recycle lab coats and goggles by donating them at the SU Office and SU Síbín before Thurs 4th May. These will be donated to students in September.
  • Glassary Collections – look out for the drop off points in Student Accommodation 27th April, 28th April, 2nd May, 3rd May, 4th May and 5th May. More info from alive@universityofgalway.ie
  • Unused Bikes Wanted – An Mheitheal Rothar, a social enterprise based on campus, are looking for donations of any unused bikes/bikes in need of repair as part of their Recycle Your Cycle initiative. The bikes will be repaired and either sold in our shop or donated to Ukrainian refugees/University of Sanctuary students. You can find out more about the initiative HERE.   • Donate Food – you can donate unopened, in-date, non-perishable food items (e.g. tins of food, packets of pasta/rice, cereal, soft drinks etc) to the collection box in the SU Office and these will be given to the Student Pantry to distribute to students. Please note we can’t accept any fresh food, out of date items or items that are already open.
  • Donate Hygiene Products – you can donate unopened hygiene products to the collection box in the SU Office and these will be donated to the Hygiene Bank. You can donate new, unused, in-date personal care and household cleaning essentials – including deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, make-up, nappies, toilet roll, laundry detergent and surface cleaner.

 

We are Hiring: Peer Learning Graduate Intern

We are looking for a friendly, energetic and goal-oriented Graduate Intern to support our CÉIM academic peer learning programme. This is a varied role in which the successful candidate will be required to work closely with diverse partners including students and academic staff to help ensure the effective delivery of CÉIM. Graduate Intern position fixed-term contract. Mid-August 2023 to Mid-May 2024. Monday-Friday (7 hours per day) based at University of Galway. Closing Date Mon 22nd May. More info HERE.

 

Partnership Agreement

We are happy to announce that we have signed the Partnership Agreement with the University! This agreement puts the onus on the University to consult and listen to the student body.

The main goals of this agreement are to make positive change in the areas of:

  • Student-Centred Decision Making
  • Student Participation and Engagement

The Students’ Union is and will remain fully autonomous and it does not affect our rights to protest and remain independent. The agreement only concerns co-funding of events, increased committee representation and student feedback. Read the full agreement HERE.

  • The SU Office will be closed from 5pm Fri 28th April to 10am Tues 2nd of May
  • The Library will be open 8.30am-9.30pm Sat 29th April, 10am-9.30pm Sun 30th April and 8.30am-10pm Mon 1st May.
  • The Reading Room will be open as usual 7am-2.30am every day.
  • The SU Shop will be open Sat 29th April 10am-3pm, closed Sun 30th April and open Mon 1st of May 9am-5pm.

Travelling Abroad this Summer?

We recommend that students who will be travelling abroad during the summer install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on their mobile devices before they leave Ireland. The Microsoft Authenticator app will allow you to continue to verify your identity when accessing your Exam Results, Emails, Microsoft 365 services etc from abroad. For more information, please see the following link

 

An exploration into the perceived factors that impact physical activity participation among female undergraduate students attending an Irish University

This research aims to explore the views of female undergraduate students on what affects their physical activity participation and on what could possibly be done within the university to help female students to be more active. More info HERE.

 

First Point of Contact Training

This training programme will equip you with the skills for receiving disclosures of sexual violence and harassment from your peers & fellow students, and starts Friday June 9thThe training takes 12 hours with a limit of 12-20 participants. It takes place in person on the University of Galway campus, in the School of Psychology from 10AM-1PM each Friday for 4 weeks (June 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th). The training is free of charge. The First Point of Contact programme is a new approach to training staff members and students in communication and interpersonal skills for providing the initial support and signposting of someone who has experienced sexual violence or harassment. GOAL’s NextGen Youth Applications are Open

GOAL’s NextGen Youth brings young people aged 18-25 together online to better understand global justice issues and deepen their understanding of Global Citizenship. This programme will guide young, motivated changemakers from all over the world to learn all about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how we can strive to create a fairer and more sustainable future for all. Participants will collaborate in creating awareness raising materials to help share their learnings and hopes for our connected world. If you are a young person living in Ireland, Ethiopia, Honduras, Sierra Leone, Uganda or Zimbabwe we want to hear from you. Leap Card Credit Update

Please note that from Thursday 4th of May we will no longer be able to top up Leap Cards at the SU Office but we will still be able to print Student Leap Cards.

To top up your Leap Card you can:

  1. Download the TFI Leap Top Up App or
  2. Call to your nearest Post Office

We have extended opening hours for the SU FREE Cloakroom during exams 09:00-19:00 Monday 17th April-Thursday 4th May (*Closed Bank Holiday Monday 1st May)

Here’s your checklist of the last few jobs to get done before you head off to enjoy it!

  1. Return your locker key
  2. Download anything you need to keep from Blackboard as it is being replaced with a new platform Canvas
  3. Donate items you no longer need at the upcoming collection days
  4. Install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile devices so you can access exam results etc if you are abroad.
  5. Collect your books from the SU Second-hand Bookshop
  6. Return your library books

Finished for the Summer?

Here’s your checklist of the last few jobs to get done before you head off to enjoy it!

  1. Return your locker key
  2. Download anything you need to keep from Blackboard as it is being replaced with a new platform Canvas
  3. Donate items you no longer need at the upcoming collection days
  4. Install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile devices so you can access exam results etc if you are abroad.
  5. Collect your books from the SU Second-hand Bookshop
  6. Return your library books

 

CÉIM Coordinator Applications Close Monday

We are hiring a Peer Learning Engagement Coordinator for our CÉIM Programme. The Graduate Intern will be employed by University of Galway Students’ Union on a three-year contract. Closing date: 5pm this Monday 24th April 2023. More info + full job description HERE.

 

Leap Card Credit Update

Please note that from Thursday 4th of May we will no longer be able to top up Leap Cards at the SU Office but we will still be able to print Student Leap Cards.

To top up your Leap Card you can:

  1. Download the TFI Leap Top Up App or
  2. Call to your nearest Post Office

Bra Donation Drive in association with Mellon Educate

South Africa has one of the highest incidence rates of sexual assault globally, however, in certain communities a bra represents status and the simple act of wearing one can drastically decrease the chances of sexual assault for a woman. We are collecting old and new bras to send out with volunteers on their annual trip in November. You can donate new and lightly used bras to the collection box in the SU Office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn 10am-5pm, Mon-Fri until Fri 5th May. More info HERE or email c.mcgrath40@nuigalway.ie

 

Free Mindfulness Practice

PhD Write-Up Bursary

The University of Galway PhD Write-Up Bursary 2023 scheme closes 5pm tomorrow Fri 21st April. This is for full-time PhD students who are near to completing their theses yet who find themselves, for whatever reason, without funding. Info + Application HERE.

 

Take a Study Break with Kanopy, Library Streaming Platform 

Check out a range of excellent films and documentaries via our Kanopy video streaming service, all provided free of charge via the Library. Kanopy is accessed via the Library catalogue and a mobile app is also available.

 

Library Study Break Policy in Operation

Make sure to use the “I’m Taking a Study Break” timesheets in the library when you are going for a break (5-60 minutes). The policy applies Monday-Friday to stop desk hogging!

 

Travelling Abroad this Summer?

We recommend that students who will be travelling abroad during the summer install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on their mobile devices before they leave Ireland. The Microsoft Authenticator app will allow you to continue to verify your identity when accessing your Exam Results, Emails, Microsoft 365 services etc from abroad. For more information, please see the following link

 

Locker Clear Out Deadline

The deadline to clear out your locker and return the key to the SU Office is 5pm Friday 5th of May. Please leave the padlock on the locker and just return the key to the SU 10am-5pm Monday-Friday upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn.

An Mheitheal Rothar- Unused Bikes Wanted – An Mheitheal Rothar, a social enterprise based on campus, are looking for donations of any unused bikes/bikes in need of repair as part of their Recycle Your Cycle initiative. The bikes will be repaired and either sold in our shop or donated to Ukrainian refugees/University of Sanctuary students. You can find out more about the initiative HERE. Donate Food – you can donate unopened, in-date, non-perishable food items (eg tins of food, packets of pasta/rice, cereal, soft drinks etc) to the collection box in the SU Office and these will be given to the Student Pantry to distribute to students. Please note we can’t accept any fresh food, out of date items or items that are already open.

Donate Hygiene Products – you can donate unopened hygiene products to the collection box in the SU Office and these will be donated to the Hygiene Bank. You can donate new, unused, in-date personal care and household cleaning essentials – including deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, make-up, nappies, toilet roll, laundry detergent and surface cleaner.

Exam Tips

During the Exam

  • Be ready at least 20 minutes before the exam
  • Have your Student ID Card ready
  • Take time to settle yourself and BREATHE
  • Read all questions carefully.
  • Leave time to review your paper at the end.
  • Set time allocations for each question and move on once the time elapses.

If something goes wrong

  • If you lose your Student ID card you can buy a new one for €20 at the Student Registry Help Desk in Áras Uí Chathail
  • If something goes wrong that is outside of your control that means you cannot attend your exam you can defer your exam to August and your result will not be capped. You must apply for a deferral BEFORE the exam takes place. More info HERE.
  • If you fail an exam, you will have an opportunity to appeal the result
  • If you fail an exam there will be an opportunity for you to resist the exam in August (first-year excluded) the grade for the repeat will be capped at 40%

Locker Clear Out Deadline

The deadline to clear out your locker and return the key to the SU Office is 5pm Friday 5th of May. Please leave the padlock on the locker and just return the key to the SU 10am-5pm Monday-Friday upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn.

 

Join in with Glassary Volunteers and the big sorting party!

Volunteer in May for the biggest sustainability project on campus – volunteers help to sort student donations for charities and make a big impact as this re-use project is all about avoid filing skips for landfill. Volunteer for two hours on campus, meet nice people, good music, free food! This hands on project is great for networking skills as we liaise with Simon Community, SVP, ARD Community Centre and many more community projects. Plus you get first pick of the great donations. Unused lab coats and goggles taking up space in your house/locker? Donate them today! Recycle lab coats and goggles by donating them at the SU Office and SU Síbín before Thurs 4th May.
