NUI Galway Students’ Union Launches Practical Training for Students
NUI Galway Students’ Union today launched their Life Skills courses for the 2022/23 academic year. Since 2009 the Students’ Union has been running a wide range of subsidised courses for the 19,000 students of NUI Galway with the aim of increasing their practical knowledge. These courses help to improve the employment prospects of students during and after college by boosting their CV’s. The courses also teach them important life skills including how to save lives.
Students’ Union Vice-President/Welfare and Equality Officer Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer said: “We are delighted to announce details of our Life Skills courses for the year ahead. Whether it’s learning Sign Language or gaining the skills to administer CPR, all of these courses help to provide a well-rounded education for our students whilst also helping them to make their CV’s stand out from the crowd when looking for jobs.”
The courses on offer from the Students’ Union include:
- Sign Language
- Heart Saver AED Training
- Mental Health Awareness Courses
- Gaeilge Classes
- Disclosure Training with Galway Rape Crisis Centre

Oiliúint Phraiticiúil do Mhic Léinn Seolta ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh
Inniu sheol Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh cúrsaí Scileanna Saoil don bhliain acadúil 2022/23. Tá réimse leathan cúrsaí fóirdheonaithe á reáchtáil ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn ón mbliain 2009 i leith don 19,000 mac léinn in OÉ Gaillimh d’fhonn a gcuid eolais phraiticiúil a mhéadú. Cuidíonn na cúrsaí seo le hionchais fostaíochta na mac léinn a fheabhsú le linn an choláiste agus agus ina dhiaidh trí bhíthin a CVanna a threisiú. Múintear scileanna saoil tábhachtacha dóibh ar na cúrsaí freisin, lena n-áirítear cén chaoi beatha a shábháil.
Bhí an méid seo a leanas le rá ag Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer, Leas-Uachtarán/Oifigeach Leasa agus Comhionannais, Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn: “Tá an-áthas orainn sonraí ár gcúrsaí Scileanna Saoil a fhógairt don bhliain amach romhainn. Cibé an mbaineann sé leis an Teanga Chomharthaíochta a fhoghlaim nó leis na scileanna a ghnóthú chun ACS a thabhairt, déanann na cúrsaí seo go léir a gcion féin le hoideachas leathan a thabhairt dár gcuid mac léinn. Chomh maith leis sin, cabhraíonn siad leo CV a bheith acu a sheasfaidh amach sa slua agus post á lorg acu.”

FREE Events to welcome all our early arrivals to NUI Galway!
• Croagh Patrick Hike 09:30-18:00 Sunday 28th August – Sign up via NUIG Mountaineering Club HERE. Immerse yourself in the wilderness! This hike will take you up the slopes of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo. Make sure to bring hiking boots and waterproofs.
• Board Games Night 18:00-20:30 Monday 29th August in the Hub downstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn. Come along to this board game extravaganza. Everything from chess and monopoly to giant jenga and cards against humanity. This is a non alcoholic event.
• Pub Quiz 19:00-21:00 Tuesday 30th August in the Corrib Room, Sult, NUI Galway. A classic pub quiz held in Sult the Students’ Union bar. Teams are created on the night so come along and meet new people.
• Global Night 19:00-23:30 Wednesday 31st August at Sult, NUI Galway. Join us in Sult the Students’ Union bar for an unforgettable night of music and dancing. DJ on till late.
• Speed Friending 17:00-19:00 Thursday 1st September in the Corrib Room, Sult, NUI Galway. Want to meet new people? Check this out. Guaranteed not awkward!
• Arriba Night 19:00-23:00 Thursday 1st September at Sult, NUI Galway. Show your moves with a fun-filled Latin mix, reggaeton night at Sult!
• Karaoke Night 19:00-23:00 Friday 2nd September at Sult, NUI Galway.
• Scavenger Hunt All Day Saturday 3rd September – Sign up HERE before 16:00 Friday 2nd September. You will be allocated a team and can take part in the hunt when it suits you 09:00-18:00 Saturday 3rd September around Galway City.
• Gaeilge 101 18:00-19:30 Monday 5th September in The View upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn. An introduction to one of Ireland’s national languages. Get to know some basic Irish Language phrases and phonetics to get you started on your Gaeilge journey!
- Campus Tours 11:00 + 14:00 Each Day 29/08, 30/08, 31/08/1/09, 2/09, 5/09, 6/09, 7/09, 8/09 and 9/09. Join your guide for a 45 minute tour of campus to get yourself orientated. MEETING POINT: The Big Yellow Thing outside the Library. Find out where everything is on campus – all the important buildings, best places for coffee etc
- Galway City Tours 17:00 1st Sept and 14:00 + 17:00 4th-11th September. MEETING POINT: The Student Plaza outside Áras na Mac Léinn. Join us for a walking tour of Galway to get to know the city. Tea/coffee/treats available.
- Fáilte Mornings 12:00-13:00 in the Corrib Room at Sult Monday-Friday until Friday 9th September. No booking needed just drop in for a chat!

Students’ Union Invite Applications to Annual Charity Fund
NUI Galway Students’ Union has opened the application process for Charities wishing to be considered as beneficiaries for its annual fundraising campaign for 2022/23. Last year students ran a series of events including a giant Christmas Raffle, a Taylor Swift night, saucy Sex Toy Bingo, charity Take Me Out, table quizzes, and a Sports Day. They raised €11,000 for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and BeLonG To Youth Services.
Application forms for the 2022/23 fund are available from the Students’ Union website here: NUIG SU Charity Application Form 2022 and the closing date for applications is 5pm Monday 29th of August 2022. Please note that any canvassing will automatically disqualify your charity from this process.
Students’ Union Vice-President/Welfare and Equality Officer Imogen O’Flaherty Falconer said: “Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities. This year we hope to raise even more money for good causes with our Charity events. These events will encourage our students to get involved in helping their community whilst also making friends and having fun.”
