NUI Galway Students’ Union Urges Caution Booking Student Accommodation

NUI Galway Students’ Union Urges Caution Booking Student Accommodation

With Leaving Certificate results being issued this week thousands of students across the country now find themselves looking for accommodation for the upcoming academic year. Housing for students has been an issue in the past and NUI Galway Students’ Union urges students to be cautious before committing to a private residence this year. Before rushing into signing a lease/contract it is extremely important to make sure the property fits the needs of all tenants and to look out for rental scams. There are properties available so don’t panic and make sure you keep a close eye on all the accommodation websites especially www.nuigstudentpad.ie

Here are some handy tips:

  1. Be aware of the following rental scams: Scammer claims to be out of the country so can’t show you the property but requests a deposit. Scammer is living at the property, and shows a number of people around. They get a deposit from several people and then flee with the cash. The transaction appears to have gone smoothly until the renter finds that the keys don’t work and the landlord has disappeared.
  2. Take your time when viewing a property. Ensure all the necessities are there e.g. washing machine, furnishings etc. Check that all gas and electrical appliances are in good working order.
  3. Take photos of the property and make sure to highlight any damages already there e.g. Cigarette burns, carpet stains, etc.
  4. If there are any repairs to be made in the property, be sure to get it in writing from the landlord or agency that these problems will be rectified before handing over your deposit.
  5. Avoid paying the deposit in cash and ensure you get a receipt for any moneys exchanged. You are legally entitled to a receipt so make sure to insist on one.
  6. Request a viewing prior to the move in date to ensure that all outstanding issues have been rectified.
  7. Ensure the house is well ventilated and that heating sources are identified prior to signing a contract/lease.
  8. Insist that a building energy rating (BER) certificate is provided prior to signing the contract. This will help you know how cold the house is likely to get and will give you an idea of the cost for heating.
  9. Ensure you are clear on the duration of the tenancy. If you sign a lease and leave early you may be liable to pay outstanding rent even though you are no longer living there. Check what the situation is in the event of a lockdown.
  10. Make sure it’s clearly outlined in your lease which utility bills you must pay.
  11. Take out contents insurance as the landlord’s policy will not cover your personal possessions.
  12. For online learning check what the broadband speeds and deals are in the neighbourhood to make sure you will be well connected.

Students’ Union President Róisín Nic Lochlainn said: Finding accommodation can be extremely stressful and people tend to rush into it. It is paramount that you follow these guidelines to avoid scams and ensure that the house you live in will be sustainable for you and your friends. Never rush into getting accommodation, be cautious and insist on receipts and any repairs where necessary. This will be where you stay for at least nine months so make sure you have all the necessities before making any commitments. Students still seeking accommodation should check www.nuigstudentpad.ie

Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh ag Iarraidh ar Mhic Léinn a Bheith Cúramach agus Cóiríocht á Cur in Áirithe acu

A luaithe a bheidh torthaí na hArdteistiméireachta eisithe an tseachtain seo, tosóidh na mílte mac léinn ar fud na tíre ag lorg áit chónaithe don bhliain acadúil nua. Bhí deacrachtaí ag baint le cóiríocht do mhic léinn san am atá thart agus tá Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh ag iarraidh ar gach mac léinn a bheith cúramach roimh ghlacadh le háit chónaithe phríobháideach i mbliana. Sula gcuirfidh tú do lámh le léas/conradh faoi dheifir, tá sé thar a bheith tábhachtach a chinntiú go n-oirfidh an áit do gach uile dhuine de na tionóntaí agus a bheith ar d’aire ar chamscéimeanna cíosa. Tá áiteanna ar fáil, mar sin ná caill an cloigeann agus cinntigh go gcoinneoidh tú súil ghéar ar na láithreáin ghréasáin go léir, www.nuigstudentpad.ie go háirithe.

Seo a leanas roinnt leideanna luachmhara:

  1. Bí ar d’aire ar na camscéimeanna cíosa seo a leanas: Deir an caimiléir go bhfuil sé thar lear agus nach féidir leis an áit a thaispeáint duit, ach iarrann sé éarlais ort mar sin féin. Tá an caimiléir ina chónaí sa teach agus tugann roinnt daoine timpeall an tí. Faigheann sé éarlais ó roinnt daoine agus ansin crochann leis an t-airgead. Dealraíonn sé go bhfuil gach rud i gceart agus i gcóir go dtí go bhfaigheann an tionónta amach nach n-oibríonn na heochracha agus nach bhfuil tásc ná tuairisc ar an tiarna talún.
  2. Tóg do chuid ama agus tú ag breathnú thart ar theach. Cinntigh go bhfuil na riachtanais go léir ann, m.sh. meaisín níocháin, troscán, srl. Cinntigh go bhfuil dea-bhail ar gach fearas gáis agus leictreach.
  3. Glac grianghraif agus tarraing aird ar aon rud atá damáistithe cheana féin m.sh. dónna ó thoitíní, smáil ar an gcairpéad, srl.
  4. Má bhíonn deisiúcháin le déanamh sula mbogfaidh tú isteach, cinntigh go bhfaighidh tú an méid sin i scríbhinn ón tiarna talún nó ón ngníomhaireacht sula dtabharfaidh tú éarlais dó nó di.
  5. Ná híoc an éarlais in airgead tirim más féidir ar chor ar bheith é agus cinntigh go bhfaighidh tú admháil ar aon airgead a íocfaidh tú. Tá tú i dteideal admhála de réir an dlí agus, mar sin, cinntigh go n-éileoidh tú ceann.
  6. Iarr deis le bhreathnú thart roimh bhogadh isteach lena chinntiú go bhfuil gach fadhb réitithe.
  7. Cinntigh go bhfuil an teach aeráilte go maith agus go dtaispeántar na foinsí téimh duit sula síneoidh tú conradh/léas.
  8. Ná sínigh an conradh gan an Teastas ar Rátáil Fuinnimh Foirgnimh (BER) a fháil ar dtús. Cabhróidh sé seo leat a fháil amach cé chomh fuar agus a bheidh an teach agus tabharfaidh sé tuairim duit faoi cé mhéad a chosnóidh sé le hé a théamh.
  9. Cinntigh go dtuigeann tú fad ama na tionóntachta. Má tá léas sínithe agat agus má fhágann tú go luath, d’fhéadfá a bheith faoi dhliteanas an cíos amuigh a íoc cé nach bhfuil tú i do chónaí ann a thuilleadh. Faigh amach céard a tharlóidh i gcás dianghlasáil eile.
  10. Cinntigh go bhfuil sé leagtha amach go breá soiléir i do léas cé na billí fóntais a bheidh ortsa a íoc.
  11. Cuir do shealúchas pearsanta faoi árachas inneachair toisc nach gclúdóidh polasaí an tiarna talún é.
  12. Le haghaidh na foghlama ar líne, seiceáil luas an leathanbhanda agus na margaí atá ar fáil sa cheantar lena chinntiú go mbeidh tú in ann brath ar do nasc leis an Idirlíon.

Bhí an méid seo le rá ag Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Róisín Nic Lochlainn: “Rud iontach strusmhar é a bheith sa tóir ar áit chónaithe agus is minic a dhéanann daoine cinntí tábhachtacha faoi dheifir. Tá sé fíorthábhachtach go leanfá na treoirlínte seo le fanacht glan ar chamscéimeanna agus lena chinntiú go mbeidh an áit a aimseoidh tú oiriúnach duit féin agus do do chuid cairde. Ná déan cinntí tábhachtacha faoi dheifir, bí ar d’aire agus éiligh admhálacha agus deisiúcháin nuair is gá. Beidh tú ag cur fút san áit seo go ceann naoi mí ar a laghad, mar sin cinntigh go sásóidh sí na riachtanais go léir atá agat sula ndéanfaidh tú aon chomhaontú. Ba chóir do mhic léinn atá fós sa tóir ar áit breathnú ar www.nuigstudentpad.ie

Students’ Union Invite Applications to Annual Charity Fund

NUI Galway Students’ Union has opened the application process for Charities wishing to be considered as beneficiaries for its annual fundraising campaign for 2021/22. Last year students took part in a series of monthly challenges including Kilometre Challenges, Random Act of Kindness Challenges and the Hair Raiser Challenge to raise €13,000 for Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health!

Application forms for the 2020/21 fund are available here: NUIG SU Charity Application Form 2021 and the closing date for applications is 5pm Friday 27th of August 2021. Please note that any canvassing will automatically disqualify your charity from this process.

Students’ Union President Róisín Nic Lochlainn said: “Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities. This year we hope to raise even more money for good causes with our Charity Challenge. Each month NUI Galway students will take on a different challenge that will be adaptable to the challenges of living with Covid-19. These challenges will encourage our students to get involved in helping their community whilst also setting goals for themselves each month.”

Fáilte á Cur ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn roimh Iarratais ar an gCiste Bliantúil Carthanachta

Tá Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, OÉ Gaillimh ag glacadh le hiarratais anois ó Charthanais ar mian leo a n-ainm a chur sa rith le haghaidh an fheachtais bhliantúil tiomsaithe airgid do 2021/22. Ghlac mic léinn páirt i sraith dúshlán míosúil anuraidh, Dúshlán na gCiliméadar, Dúshlán na gCineáltas gan Choinne agus Dúshlán Hair Raiser ina measc, agus d’éirigh leo €13,000 a thiomsú d’Ionad Éigeandála na Gaillimhe um Éigniú, Comhpháirtíocht Uathachais na Gaillimhe agus Helplink Mental Health.

Tá foirmeacha iarratais ar chiste 2020/21 le fáil ó láithreán gréasáin Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, www.su.nuigalway.ie, agus ní mór iarratais a chur isteach faoi 5 i.n., Dé hAoine, an 27 Lúnasa 2021. Tabhair faoi deara go ndéanfar do charthanas a dhícháiliú go huathoibríoch má dhéantar aon iarracht canbhasáil ar a shon.

Bhí an méid seo le rá ag Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, Róisín Nic Lochlainn: “Tá traidisiún na carthanachta go smior i mic léinn OÉ Gaillimh d’ainneoin na gciorruithe uile agus na ndúshlán a bhíonn le sárú acu gach uile lá. Tá súil againn níos mó airgid ná riamh a bhailiú i mbliana ar son cúiseanna maithe trínár nDúshlán Carthanachta. Gach mí, tabharfaidh mic léinn de chuid OÉ Gaillimh faoi dhúshlán nua, a bheifear in ann a chur in oiriúint do na cora a bhaineann le maireachtáil le Covid-19. Spreagfaidh na dúshláin seo ár gcuid mac léinn lena gcion féin a dhéanamh le cabhrú lena bpobal agus le spriocanna a leagan síos dóibh féin gach mí freisin.”
