Students’ Union Launch Sustainable Monday Campaign
NUI Galway Students’ Union launch their #SustainableMonday campaign today to highlight the small changes we can all make that will have a big impact on our planet. Each Monday in February the SU will have tips and information on ways to live more sustainably. With Covid-19 restrictions we are all more conscious of what we consume and the waste we produce. This campaign aims to offer NUIG students advice and encouragement to live more sustainably.
Week 1 will look at the food we consume and the impact our food choices have on the world around us. There’ll be meat free Monday recipes along with tips on which vegetables are in season this month. Throughout the campaign the SU will be running competitions to win reusable keep cups and water bottles where students share their own #SustainableMonday tips and ideas.
Students’ Union President Pádraic Toomey said: “We are delighted to launch our #SustainableMonday campaign this month. This year we introduced our SU Clean Ups and they were a huge success showing how much our students care about the world they live in. This campaign will show that by making small changes in our lives, like our choice of toothbrush, we can be part of the move to a sustainable future.”
Students’ Union Welfare and Equality Officer Róisín Nic Lochlainn added: “This campaign is very much about thinking globally by acting locally. We will be encouraging our students to look at sustainable food and transport choices. We will be highlighting the different charity shops in Galway along with making your own clothes with our online Stitch & Bitch knitting and crafts group.”

There are always risks when taking drugs
Covid-19 means that this is an extra risky time to use drugs as they can lower your immune system leaving you at greater risk of illness from the virus. Covid-19 also means that there have been changes to the drug market. Using alternatives to what you would normally use or using new drugs can increase your risk of overdose. It is always safer not to use at all, but if you do, please follow harm reduction information to help reduce your risk.
- Talk to your friends about using drugs and research the risks on www.drugs.ie
- Can you trust the dealer? Risks are increased if you buy from an unknown person
- What’s in the pill or powder? Don’t assume you know the content based on what you are sold.
- Start low and go slow – start with a very small dose to see how you react to the drug. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
- Leave the mixing to the DJ – mixing drugs increases the risk of becoming unwell or overdose.
- Don’t be afraid to get help by calling 999/112 if you or a friend become unwell or feel suicidal after using drugs. Using drugs alone can be dangerous due to the risk of overdose and lack of emergency help.

Students’ Union Leaders Appeal for Compassion from NUI Galway
Students’ Union leaders from USI, UCC, Trinity, GMIT and Maynooth have together written to the NUI Galway President and Vice-President to voice their concern about the University’s opposition to the introduction of policies that will support students undertaking assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic. This appeal for more compassionate policies echoes continued calls from NUI Galway Students’ Union for the University to provide additional flexibility in assessments this year.
Specific policies that have been introduced in other Universities include:
- The option to retake passed exams without charge where students felt they could have achieved a better mark.
- Removal of repeat exam fees.
A recent survey of over 4,000 NUI Galway students found that “54.9% were unsure that they would get a Graduate job offer”. The opportunity to have free resits of both passed and failed exams would ensure the graduating class to 2021 have a better chance of finding a job without the COVID-19 taking more from their futures.
Union of Students in Ireland (USI) represent 374,000 students across the island of Ireland and USI President Lorna Fitzpatrick said: “We hope that the opportunities that other colleges such as UCC, Trinity & Maynooth have introduced would also be introduced in NUI Galway with the aim of providing a consistent approach to students across the sector. We recognise the measures introduced to date, and welcome same, however, we do not believe they provide sufficient supports for students during this time.”
Students’ Union President Pádraic Toomey added: “We are particularly worried about our final year students as they will go out into the workforce and compete with students from UCC, Trinity and Maynooth. We need a level playing field where all students are offered equal opportunities to get the best possible results in these extremely trying circumstances. The continued refusal of NUI Galway to remove the exorbitant €295 repeat exam fee is putting huge stress on our students who are already at breaking point.”

What is Údarás na hOllscoile?
Údarás na hOllscoile, the Governing Authority, is the ultimate decision-making body in the University. Established under the 1997 Irish Universities Act, Údarás na hOllscoile is a 40-person statutory board charged with over-seeing the strategic direction of the University, the overall management of its resources, and the approval of its policies and procedures.
Board Membership: What is involved?
Members of Governing Authority are collectively responsible for the long-term sustainability of the University. They are required to bring independent judgment to bear on issues such as strategy, performance, resources, key appointments and standards of conduct.
In particular, each member has a fiduciary duty to the University in the first instance (i.e. the duty to act in good faith and in the best interests of the University).
Time commitment: The Governing Authority meets five times per year at the end of the month in February, April, June, October and in mid-December. In addition, members are also members on one sub-Committee of Governing Authority. The sub-Committees meet five times per year, ahead of the Governing Authority meetings. Documentation for meetings is provided a week in advance and requires a couple of days reading and preparation.
Although all members are expected to attend some meetings in person, it will be possible to participate in meetings remotely via online platforms.
