Due to students getting in touch with us about classes over-running and starting/finishing at different times we were able to lobby the University on your behalf. The University President has now sent a reminder to all University teaching staff that all classes start on the hour and finish at 10 to the hour e.g. start 9am finish 9.50am.

WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) is a two-day programme that helps you to develop your own personally tailored Wellness Action Plan. You can use this plan on a day-to-day basis to manage your wellness, or to help you if you become unwell. Registration Open for NStEP Training
NStEP (the National Student Engagement Programme) training sessions have been booked and will take place 2pm-5pm Weds 27th Nov. You can reserve your place HERE. These sessions are open to all students however only 30 people can attend an individual session. The training will focus on the following areas – The Student Learning Experience, Gathering Student Opinion, Effective Feedback, Developing Solutions, Making Change Happen, Closing the Loop. Practise self-care and self-compassion this week! We now have two free shared mindfulness practice sessions in NUI Galway each week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Wednesday lunchtime Mindfulness with Dr Phil Noone: 1.15pm to 1.35pm in Seminar Room 5, 2nd Floor, Áras Moyola (Up to and including 10th Dec)
All our shared practice sessions are free and suitable for people with no previous knowledge of mindfulness as well as those who have been practising for many years. Staff, students and members of the community are welcome!

Outreach project ‘Let’s Talk Cancer’
‘Let’s Talk Cancer’ aims to dispel the numerous myths surrounding the risk factors associated with cancer, where facts can often be misinterpreted and research studies sensationalised. This is achieved through short, snappy, animated videos! The newest video focuses on ketogenic diets and cancer treatment: Watch it here.

Submissions Open for First Cut! Youth Film Festival
Calling young filmmakers, aged between 12-24 years! Do you have a short film you want to see on the big screen? Then First Cut! wants to hear from you!
Whether you are an individual filmmaker or part of a school, college or youth group, visit firstcutfilmfestival.com to find out how to submit your film free of charge. Every type of film is welcome, including fiction, documentary, animation and music video. The festival runs Weds 11th – Sat 14th March 2020. The deadline for entries is Tues 21st Jan.

NiteLine is for you. It’s a listening, support and information service run by and for the students of NUIG. Volunteers go through a rigorous screening and training programme based on the Samaritans model and run with the help of the NUIG counselling services. The service runs 9pm-12am Wednesdays & Thursdays on 089 219 6918. They’re here if you ever feel that you would like to talk to someone that will listen, accept and understand without judging. You can talk about anything; no problem is too big or too small.

Odd Shoe Day will take place 9am-1pm Mon 18th Nov at Smokey’s Café. We are asking people to wear odd pairs of shoes to raise awareness for the Special Olympics. We are fundraising on their behalf and will have prizes to give away to those who buy a raffle ticket on the day. Top prize is a pair of Panasonic speakers. - Candle Lit Vigil Weds 20th Nov, Outside Áras na Mac Léinn, 6pm As it is Transgender day of Remembrance, we will be hosting a candlelit vigil with a symbolic flag raising to pay our respects, and to show solidarity to past and present trans students in NUI Galway and within the community.
- Here’s the T Weds 20th Nov, IT202, 7-9pm A panel discussion involving a parental perspective on raising a trans child, a trans person’s perspective on parents who may need time to come to terms with acceptance and a discussion on gender performance.

Weds 20th Nov: Christmas Shoebox Appeal – Ógra Shinn Féin are collecting shoeboxes, money donations and items to fill boxes with on Weds 20th Nov from 10am beside Smokey’s Café. Half of the shoeboxes will go to children living in Direct Provision and half go to the 200 homeless children within Galway Simon Community. Please give whatever you can and help make Christmas that small bit merrier for the most vulnerable in society!

Students in the NUIG Children’s Studies are carrying out a research study to find out ‘The type of illegal drugs and frequency most frequently used amongst first year college students in Ireland’. #GalwayGirl Photocall This Saturday
COPE Galway are holding an event to highlight domestic abuse at 2.30pm at the Spanish Arch this Saturday. They want as many women and girls, of all ages and backgrounds, to be present for a mass group photo in support of #GalwayGirl – a fundraising and awareness campaign for the new domestic abuse service in Galway, Modh Eile House.

There’s a free SafeTALK course on 6.15pm-9.15pm Tues 3rd Dec in the Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill. SafeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares attendees, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. SafeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources

Congratulations! Make sure you register for your Seanad Éireann vote. Seanad Éireann is the Upper House of the Irish Legislature and is composed of sixty members. Three of these senators are elected by National University of Ireland graduates. You can get a registration form in the SU or online here.

SU Council Meeting This Monday

We are holding an election to fill the vacant position of SU Gender and LGBT+ Rights Officer next Thurs 14th Nov 10am-5pm at Smokey’s Café. Please bring your NUIG ID with you to vote. If you won’t be on campus to vote you can register for a Remote Vote on the SU website until midnight Weds 13th Nov.
We Are Open!
Please note that during the graduation ceremonies we are open as usual 10am-5pm Monday-Friday – just let security know you need to go to the SU. All the other services in Áras na Mac Léinn are open as usual too including Flirt FM, ALIVE, the Student Health Unit and the Socs Box.

Library Study Break Policy Starts Monday
Just a reminder that the Library Study Break Policy starts this Mon 11th Nov until to Fri 20th Dec. If you leave your belongings unattended at study desk for more than 1 hours other students have permission to move them and use your desk. Please use the “I’m taking a study break” sheets in the Library.
Graduating?
Congratulations! Make sure you register for your Seanad Éireann vote. Seanad Éireann is the Upper House of the Irish Legislature and is composed of sixty members. Three of these senators are elected by National University of Ireland graduates. You can get a registration form in the SU or online here.

Invitational Boxing Tournament
The NUIG Boxing Club is holding an Invitational Boxing Tournament at 6pm on Sun 24th of Nov in the Kingfisher NUIG. Tickets are €10 for adults and €5 for students. Email nuig.boxingclub@gmail.com for information.
Coldvember is a fundraising event for the month of November aiming to raise money to bridge the gap in funding for Mental Health Services for students at NUI Galway. Each day during November you are invited to join them for a swim at Blackrock. The first swim is at 1.30pm tomorrow Friday 1st of November. More info and the donation page are available here.
The Galway Bay Brewery Running Club is the only free running club that gives you a free beer for your efforts! Join them this Sunday at 12.30pm for their monthly 5/8/10k run.
Free Meditation Class Saturday
FREE Introduction to Meditation class 2pm-3pm this Sat 9th Nov at OLBC Hall, 11 Ely Place, Sea Road. This event is free of charge and open to everybody.
Be Part of Galway 2020
Galway 2020 is looking for 2,020 participants to take part in their Opening Ceremony in February. The lead up to the opening ceremony will take place from 2nd February with 7 nights of events across Galway finishing on Saturday 8th February with a huge open air finale in Galway city. Living With Loss Talk
The Irish Hospice Foundation are holding a free talk on Living With Loss at 7.30pm on Thursday 14th of November in the Clayton Hotel. The talk will provide information about grief and the range of supports available to bereaved people. All are welcome and more information is available here.
