We still have some spaces left on our Anti-Racism Workshop 10am-1.30pm Mon 4th Nov. This workshop will take participants through a lively, engaged process looking at how racism functions, where it came from and what we can do to build a more equal society, locally and globally. Previous participants have described the workshop as “thought provoking” “a total eye-opener” and “inspiring”. The cost is €5 and you can sign up in the SU Mon-Fri 10am-5pm or phone 091 493 570.

The NUIG Graduate Jobs Fair is on 12.30pm-3.30pm Tues 1st Oct in the Kingfisher Sports Hall. There’ll be over 110 employers attending.

Bike Thefts
There have been an alarming number of bicycle thefts reported to Galway Gardaí in recent days with most of these thefts from the 3rd level institutions.
The following Crime Prevention Advice is advised:
•Spend 10% to 20% of the value of your bike on two locks.
•Use any provided safe bike parking facilities, and lock your bike tightly to an immovable object. The NUI Galway secure bicycle compound (see the Cycling Map for location) is located to the west of the Arts/Science Concourse Building. Anyone with a valid in date student / staff University ID card can access the compound. You must also swipe out.
•Keep the lock off the ground.
•Take a photo of your bike, note the serial number and email it to yourself so that you have a record of it.
•If there are no safe bike parking facilities lock your bike indoors or in well-lit areas if possible.
Info Session on Postgrad Scholarship Applications
The IRC Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship call for 2020 is now open, and the NUIG Research office is having an advisory session to support applications: 5.30pm Thurs 10th Oct in Lecture Theatre 243, Áras Moyola. This is a good opportunity for both applicants and supervisors to seek guidance on their application and to have any questions answered.
Good news! The Student Registry Helpdesk (formerly SID) in Áras Uí Chathail will resume the NUI Galway Lost and Found service from today.
FierceAF: Boxing Edition in Salthill 10am-12.30pm this Saturday
The event is designed for all levels of participation and will have coaches on hand from 4 different boxing clubs circuits to try out different aspects of boxing and training, exhibition fights in a main boxing ring, swag bags with wraps and gum shields, all for just €15 (€10 online). This will be followed by FierceAF: Beach Edition, a FREE event that will take place on the beach in Salthill from 1-3pm, where participants will be able to observe demonstrations, try out a variety of activities and meet different local clubs and organisations, including Yoga, Taekwondo and Tai Chi. Join the Gobal Climate Strike Tomorrow
NUI Galway Students’ Union will be marching in support of the Global Climate Strike TOMORROW Friday the 20th of September. We will be meeting outside Áras na Mac Léinn/Sult at 12:30pm and heading to Eyre Square to then march to Spanish Arch at 1pm. Join us! The University has also invited students and staff to meet at 11am tomorrow outside the Quad where the University Green Flag will be lowered to half-mast as a symbolic gesture by the University Community to demonstrate our solidarity to our school students.

The Global Goals Jam takes place on campus this weekend Fri 20th – Sun 22nd Sept. Students and staff that sign up are divided into teams, all teams work together, using a tailored toolkit, to create interventions aimed at addressing a challenge relevant to the campus: e.g. challenge related to energy, waste, transport, water etc. Teams work to find real and meaningful solutions to address the challenge developed. Learn To Swim
“Learn to Swim” is an 8 week program aimed at complete beginner swimmers or those looking to improve their strokes. It runs every Wednesday starting 25th of Sept. There are 2 groups, one at 7.30pm and one at 8.15pm and you will be assigned to one based on your abilities. Being able to swim is something people take for granted but it really is an important life skill. It’s €55 for 8 lessons, which works out much cheaper than any other lessons. Pool Lifeguard Course
The Swimming Club are running a Water Safety Ireland Pool Lifeguard course at NUIG. It is a 10 week course starting next Monday 23rd September from 9.30pm -11pm. It will be run half in the pool and half theory, and will be assessed with an exam on the last week. Then you will get a certificate which allows you to work as a pool lifeguard in any pool in the world! Ideal for if you want to work in a camp on a J1. Join Fierce As Female 10am-12.30pm Sat 28th of Sept in Salthill for their huge boxing class for women. There will be 200 women and 10 coaches from 4 clubs to help women give boxing a try. There will also be a free outdoor event on the beach afterwards and you get a swag bag. You don’t need any boxing experience and this event is for women of all fitness levels and ages.

Join us 10am-4pm Fri 27th Sept at the Moore Institute NUIG to discuss sports, identities, culture and digital humanities as part of the Examine European Cultural Identity IRC funded research project. Enjoy the lecture given by Prof Alan Tomlinson and after lunch you are invited to join a gathering of researchers and practitioners from the arts, humanities, and sciences for an interactive workshop exploring identities, cultures, and crises through the lens of Sports and Media. Support the #CLIMATESTRIKE
Over the last year young climate activists from across Ireland have held protests over a lack of government action on climate change. Tomorrow Friday 20th of September there will be a Global day of protest led by school strikers calling for urgent action on Climate Change. NUI Galway are calling on all staff and students to convene in College Park in front of the Quad at 11am Friday 20th September. We will drop the Green Flag to half-mast as a symbolic gesture by the University Community to demonstrate our solidarity to our school students.
Free Workshop: Feminism, Fertility and the Future
This one day FREE workshop takes place at NUI Galway on Thurs 3rd Oct and all are welcome to attend. More info and free tickets are available here.
On Wednesday 9th of October 2nd year zoology student Gary Moscarelli is holding a Silent Disco in aid of the world land trust in the Róisín Dubh. For every €90 we raise 1 acre of critically endangered rain forest can be saved from deforestation. Tickets are €5 and can be bought through Gary. Tickets on sale every Monday between 2pm-4pm in Smokey’s Café on the concourse. 100% of proceeds go to the World Land Trust.
The Beacon
The Beacon play will take place in the Town Hall Theatre Galway 20th -28th of September. Look out for exclusive dress rehearsal access and lighting production masterclasses for NUIG students through the Druid partnership.

LIFT Ireland is a not-for-profit initiative aimed at increasing the level of positive leadership in Ireland. LIFT Ireland’s learning process is based on eight key leadership values. Each week, for a total of eight weeks, a certified facilitator guides a roundtable of 4-6 individuals through a specific leadership value. Using a proven systemic approach, the members of each roundtable reflect on what that value means to them and how they can improve in this area. The NUI Galway Volunteering Fair takes place 11am-4pm Thurs 19th Sept in Áras na Mac Léinn. This is a great chance to get involved with local charity and community groups through volunteering. You can also get an award for your time spent volunteering.
6 Week FREE Stress Control Programme
“Stress Control” is a FREE six session class in the NUIG CSI building which teaches people to ‘become their own therapist’. Each session lasts for 90 minutes (including a break). The course starts Weds 18th of Sept and runs 10am-11.30am each Wednesday until 23rd October. Spaces are limited so sign up HERE.

Chinese Course at NUI Galway
A 20 week evening course, An Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture, will commence in NUIG 7pm-9pm Weds 25th September 2019. The fee is €120 for NUI Galway students. The course is designed for people with no Chinese language basics but who have a strong interest in China or who travel or do business in China. It covers not only the Chinese language basics but also a brief introduction to the history of China, Chinese philosophies, customs and traditions, Chinese protocol and business etiquette, Chinese food and wine, Chinese medicine and the concepts of Fengsui and yinyang. Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme – Applications Open
This programme offers scholarships for suitably qualified individuals to pursue a research master’s or PhD in any discipline. Funds include a stipend of €16,000 per annum, a contribution to fees, and eligible direct research expenses of €2,250 per annum.

FREE Tickets: The Kinds of Sex You Might Have At College
The Kinds Of Sex You Might Have At College is a play about what you want, how you want it, if you want it and what happens when you don’t. It takes place 1pm & 5pm Thurs 12th & Fri 13th Sept and FREE tickets are available online here.
This play tackles experiences from across all genders, all relationships and all sexualities (or as many of them as we could fit into one hour). This play will equip you with a more proactive understanding of consent to apply to your future intimate encounters if you choose to have them.
Trigger warning: This performance contains language of a sexual nature and themes of sexual violence.

Student Leap Cards now just €10
To get your shiny new Student Leap Cards all you need to do is apply online HERE, then bring your code next week (it only lasts 7 days), your new college ID and €10 up to the SU Office. These are valid until the 31st of December 2020 and we can also top your card up for you.
Research Study Participants Required
We are looking for healthy individuals, aged 18 to 30, to complete a questionnaire, have screening bloods taken and undergo a bone marrow aspiration. Expenses paid. Contact veronica.mcinerney@nuigalway.ie with name, address and phone number.

Culture and Leadership Tech Talk with Rent the Runway
On Weds 11th Sept, join Rent the Runway at the Portershed for a tech talk on lessons from working in microservices to be followed by a session on culture and leadership. Both sessions give an opportunity to meet the Rent the Runway team based in Galway, which is the location of their European Headquarters, and learn more about the company and current vacancies.
