NUI Galway Students’ Union Raises €11,000 for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & ISPCC
NUI Galway Students’ Union organised a wide array of charity events over the 2013/14 academic year. Over 500 students took part in naked calendars, charity skydives, aquathons, fight nights, a Christmas day in November and collection days to raise €11,000 for charity in the process!
All of the money raised from these events has been donated to the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2013/14 – Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC).
Applications are now open for charities wishing to apply to be considered as one of the Students’ Union nominated charities for the 2014/15 academic year. Further information is available here.
Declan Higgins, Students’ Union President said:
“Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, students have once again done their bit to help others. NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities and they have excelled themselves this year.”
Helen Mortimer, Executive Director of Galway Rape Crisis Centre said:
“We are extremely grateful to the students of NUI Galway for their continued support of Galway Rape Crisis Centre’s vital work. Income levels for the Galway Rape Crisis Centre continue to fall due to grant cuts and a poor commitment by government to address the issues of sexual violence and child abuse. These funds will be a huge help.”
Emma Hayden, ISPCC Fundraising Officer said:
“We are delighted with this support from NUI Galway Students’ Union. The money raised will go towards funding our 24 hour Childline telephone and online services. Last year in our Galway office alone, we received just over 35,000 calls from children that are vulnerable, alone or in need of the support of a trusted adult.”
