Measles in NUI Galway

The Department of Public Health has been notified of two confirmed cases of measles in students at NUI Galway.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications. The only way to prevent measles is by vaccination.

Any student who has not had two doses of MMR vaccine should be vaccinated as soon as possible.

Handwashing helps stop the spread of infectious diseases.

If you have a skin rash, high temperature, cough, runny nose or red or watery eyes please stay at home until 4 days after the onset of symptoms and you are well again. You should also contact your G.P. by phone if you are unwell.

Unvaccinated housemates of cases of measles will need to stay at home for a number of days depending on when they were exposed. This is to avoid transmitting measles to others.

More information on measles is available at https://www.hpsc.ie/hpsc/A-Z/VaccinePreventable/Measles/Factsheet/
