Referenda 2014
On Thursday 6th March 2014 you will be asked to vote in two separate referenda and on Thursday 13th March 2014 you will be asked to vote in a third referendum.
All referenda have been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.
1. Referendum on the Students’ Union Position on the Issue of Abortion (Thurs 6th March)
This referendum will decide whether or not the Students’ Union adopts a neutral position with regard to abortion.
The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:
Do you agree with the following proposition:
“That NUI Galway Students’ Union repeal the result of RFC13/1 (position on Abortion), which mandated the Students’ Union to adopt an active pro-choice position in relation to abortion.
Henceforth, the Students’ Union shall adopt a neutral position with regard to abortion.”
2. Referendum on the Students’ Union Position on the campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel (Thurs 6th March)
This referendum will decide whether or not the Students’ Union adopts a position in support of the campaign of “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel”.
The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:
Do you agree with the following proposition:
“That NUI Galway Students’ Union actively supports the campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel.”
3. Referendum on the Students’ Union Position on the Issue of Couples of the Same Gender Availing of Civil Marriage (Thurs 13th March)
On Thursday 13th March you will be asked to vote in a third referendum on whether or not the Students’ Union supports couples of the same gender to avail of civil marriage.
The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:
Do you agree with the following proposition:
“That NUI Galway Students’ Union actively supports all measures that extend to homosexual couples the same rights enjoyed by heterosexual couples, including, but not limited to, supporting a referendum to amend Bunreacht na hÉireann to expressedly permit couples of the same gender to avail of civil marriage.”
This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.
How to Vote
In Person at a Polling Station
Polling Stations will be open on campus from 10:00am to 8:00pm. To vote at a polling station you must present your NUI Galway ID. No other form of ID will suffice.
Locations and opening hours of each Polling Station are available on the Students’ Union website.
Remote Vote
Students must register before midnight on either Wednesday 5th March (for the 1st and 2nd Referenda) or Wednesday 12th March (for the third referendum). Once registered students can then cast their vote online during polling hours.

1. The Students’ Union will be mandated to automatically oppose any invitation
to members of the organisations listed below to speak at this university.
2. Students’ Union Officers shall be prohibited from sharing a public platform
with members of the listed organisations.
3. Organisations may be added and removed by ballot of NUI Galway Students’
Union Council. Proposals will be submitted by class reps or Students’ Union
Executive Officers.
4. The list of organisations under the No Platform Policy shall be reserved for
organisations that are deemed to be fascist and/or racist by the Students’
Union Council.

• Combat 18
• Hizb ut- Tahrir
• MPAC UK (Muslim Public Affairs Committee)
• The National Front.
• Democratic Right Movement
• MPAC Ireland

NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Skydive 2014
When? April 2014 on weather permitting dates to be decided
Where? Galway Airport
Why? To raise money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Childline/ISPCC
How? A freefall tandem skydive from 10,000 feet at 200 km/hour
How much? Non-refundable Registration fee €15 (usually €30)
Skydive Cost €199 (usually €240)
Money for charities €196 (plus any extra raised)
TOTAL TO TAKE PART €410

How do I fundraise? Once you have signed up Skydive Ireland will post you out your sponsorship card and then it is up to you to get fundraising. You will also be able to raise money online at the following link: Online Fundraising where you can set up your own page.
